Volunteer Work

When school starts again next month, I am looking to join National Honor Society. I'm aware of how great it will look on college applications and hope that it will boost my social skills as well. However, volunteering is a big part of the application, and I have done zero volunteer work this summer! It's not that I'm too busy to give back to my community, but I have no experience with volunteering and am just not quite sure how to start. Is there anyone out there that has ever volunteered, and can give me some tips or even recommendations as to where to volunteer at? The part that is confusing me the most is- how exactly do I volunteer? Am I supposed to sign up with the business somewhere, or do I have to call them and ask if they are looking for volunteer? Thank you for your help!

I am so glad to hear you want to volunteer! It can be a great experience for future work or just a good place to meet kind people while helping your community! You could choose to volunteer for a place that is related to whatever you will be studying. Maybe even as a way to see if you want to work in a certain field. Otherwise, you can find local non-profits, such as animal shelters, food banks, environmental groups, etc. Just contact them and ask if they have any volunteer opportunities! Most places have a minimum amount of hours per month you must commit to, so be sure to ask about that! Some places will have an application for you to fill out, while others just ask your availability and contact details. Here is a great website that connects organizations and volunteers. You may want to check it out.

@MusesM Oh thank you, same to you! Is your picture of you? If so, you are gorgeous! What did you go to college for, if you don't mind me asking?

Last year my daughter got a letter telling her she could apply for Junior Honor Society and it gave us the requirements. One of the requirements was volunteering. It gave us some ideas. One of her friends collected items to give to the SPCA. Another volunteered at the library. It said you could also volunteer to tutor other students. My daughter ended up working at a local food pantry, and I went along to help her with it. We worked every other Monday night for 2-3 hours handing out food to the local community. It was fun and interesting. I would suggest you think about what you want to do, and then just contact that company and tell them you're interested in volunteer work and see what they have available for you.

It's very rewarding... gives you a good insight into matters that you may not otherwise been aware of... I would encourage you to connect with a group or charity that you have an interest in.... I volunteer with elderly people, and help a dog refuge organisation...and was a member of the red cross years ago....
