It was in 1984 that I got to experience malls

That was our first trip abroad. There were no malls here those days. Singapore, already known for its well laid out plan had these malls lined up. It was Christmas time. The multi storied malls mesmerised me. There were Xmas decorations hanging all over. There were also live bands in most of the malls. I shall never ever forget this experience. And yes. That was my first experience going up and down the escalator! And the first thing I bought were chocolates!

Do you remember the name of the mall? I visited Singapore in the '80s and I went to malls called Isetan and Metro on Orchard Road.

I do not remember - Orchard something. We went to the famous Serangoon Road where Indians live. There we shopped for many things that were quite cheap too. I had spotted some paper serviettes in that Orchard Mall - red striped and told my husband we should get back and buy them but the next day that Mall was closed and we were leaving that morning.

I can only imagine what it was like to experience a mall for the first time - and how busily exciting it must have been! I grew up with a mall near our house - and I believe it was built just as we moved there (when I was 2). Oh yes, escalators were always exciting - elevators too! How were stores like where you lived at the time? And how were the chocolates?

We had a few good shops when we were in the city but there were no malls. Now they are seen at every step. Chocolates were not seen as many as they are now. I do online shopping now and so sky is the limit for shopping.

We have them even here in the semi rural town where I live but I still patronise the old shops where we have been shopping for years.
