There's a lot of bad news out there, but sometimes, what could have been a tragic story in the news turns out to be one that leaves you feeling thankful that a tragedy didn't happen. And it made me wonder if I would be as quick to spring into action as the people in this incident were?
What might have been a blood bath was averted by some swift action on the part of a handful of passengers riding a French train when a heavily armed gunman was prevented from acting out his planned attack. The three men, all American, subdued the gunman and beat him into unconsciousness.
The "suspect" is a 26-year-old Moroccan who has spent time in Syria and has ties to radical groups. He was carrying a box-cutter, a handgun and an automatic rifle. He wounded one of the heroes with the box-cutter but he never got a chance to fire the automatic weapon on the train.
I was surprised to learn that no one is searched or put through metal detectors when boarding trains in Europe. Still, you'd think someone would notice the automatic rifle?
I am very proud of these quick-thinking young men, knowing that because of them, a lot of lives were saved. Can you imagine what might have happened if this gunman had been able to go shooting his way through the train? Horrible. And what if no one had noticed him, or what if everyone had just screamed and tried to hide? They'd all be dead, most likely.
What about you, do you think you'd be brave in this kind of situation?

OMG, he is such a terrorist. What did they do to the terrorist after all? Did they kill him?

@Rollo1 But what will police/justice do to that terrorist? Will they execute him or put him in prison? Or should I ask what SHOULD they do to someone like that?

@Rollo1 Ok, I get that they don't execute anyone. But is that a good thing? SHOULD they execute him?

@Rollo1 Yes. The question is till when? Most of the people (including me) are afraid to fight back fearing the politics and its consequences :(

I am so proud of these men who stood up for what is right and subdued people who out to kill or maim. I often wonder how I would react in this situation. Would I be quick thinking enough or would I scream and hide? I like to think it wouldn't be the latter, yet in a crisis who knows?

That is great the three men subdued him. I hope I could be a brave as they were and take someone like that down if I were in a similar situation.
