Reading is a Worthwhile Hobby, don't you agree?

I hate it when people say that reading books is a waste of time. For one, you gain new knowledge every time you read a book. Books can help you learn new skills or even improve the skills you already have. Second, you get to explore worlds and meet characters that you probably wouldn't be able to go to or meet in real life. And lastly, books can enhance your personality. When a person is well-read, it goes to show that the person has a lot of stuff to offer be it in light conversations or intense discussions. So to anyone who says books are for losers, well, think again.

I think I have been reading ever since I was made to understand that there were words written down. I would read everything in sight and often would run the library out of books in my age range. When I was in the fifth grade I found some books I wanted to read but they were slotted for high school readers. The librarian didn't want to let me check them out but my teacher told her to let me have them because he knew I could read and understand them. Often when there was reading aloud to do in the class I would be called on more often than anyone else. I remember one time the teacher tried to be fair to the other students but after several students had an impossible time reading the passage so that it could be understood she asked me to read it and unfortunately made the comment "so we can all understand it" So I was labeled teachers pet. This was in the seventh grade so you would have expected more of the students would be able to read creditably. I have always told my children, and now my grand children that if you learn nothing else at school, learn to read well. Because if you can read well you can teach yourself anything else you may want to know.

@inkyuboz I've always loved who done it books. Then when I was fifteen I was introduced to sci fi. Now I am a die hard sci fi fanatic, but I still read just about anything in print.

@savak03 Oooohhh, who's your favorite Sci-fi author? I've always been curious about the works of HG Wells, Isaac Asimov, etc.

I was like that when I was younger too. One of the best books I've ever read back then was this mystery novel by Agatha Christie called "And Then There Were None". That was a really satisfying book. I've loved whodunnit mysteries ever since.

i have some friends who are lazy to read books too, but i also have those friends who are avid novel readers. Me, i guess i am in the middle. I read books when they are available. Reading books are definitely worthwhile, apart from new knowledge, they also enhance your memory.

Well I used to read books before. I love books but nowadays all of them are just in a pile somewhere or in boxes and never get read. I prefer to just surf the net instead of reading books. Even ebooks are just sitting in my mobile taking up space. XD

I love to read. I read anything I can get. I have even read encyclopedias, dictionaries and phone books. Growing up without electricity, reading was my favorite pastime.

Yup, I even read the backs of cereal boxes whenever I can. Hahaha. I just love reading since I was a kid and it has stuck with me. I don't care what other people think, it's their loss.
