I guessed it was some kind of fungus or lichen growth on tree bark. I couldn't have pinpointed it as precisely as @owlwings though

Welcome to MyLot! Were a pretty friendly lot here and if there's anything you want to know about the site, there are many people who will be glad to help. Your picture is of a bracket fungus and a rather pretty one. I'm sorry I don't know which kind it is and whether it is edible or not (some are, though you probably want to enjoy it as it is rather than in the pot!). The tree it's growing on looks as though it's a large and fine one. Unfortunately, the bracket means that it is diseased and that the fungus will weaken the wood, even if the tree still seems to be alive, so it may be necessary to take the tree down. If it's near property or could otherwise be a danger, you might want an experienced tree surgeon to have a look at it.

thank you for the information here.Yes,we did have a tree specialist looking at it.Said he the tree was fine. But at that time the fungi was not there. The tree is a Maple tree. Not my question is now.Maybe the person that look at the tree was not a tree surgeon. Thank you for this.I appreciated it.

@amadeo He may have known his trees but if the fungus wasn't evident, he probably wouldn't have been able to tell that it was diseased and, in any case, perhaps all you asked him to do was to tell you if it was safe or whether it needed pruning. A diseased tree may be safe for several years and I believe that maples are not inclined to shed limbs suddenly and without warning as much as some trees.

It looks like mushrooms on the tree to me. Is that what it is?
