How Does One Get A Reality Show?

I'm not talking about "Keeping Up With The Kardashians". I'm talking about those shows on the travel channels. We have one here called "My Great Big Crazy Family Adventure" where a family travelled around the world - family of 2 parents, a 3 year old and a 7 year old on the Autism spectrum. I couldn't do that. But how did he get the show?
How about the guy that travelled to different cities trying all things bacon? How did he get that show? There is another one called "The Weapon Hunter". The guy goes around the country looking for interesting weapons. Really? Who comes up with this stuff?
These days there are reality shows for just about everything. My goodness, there is a new one starting that is a competition between, oh I don't know, iron workers. Guys that have to "make" something using iron and fire. Whatever. Who comes up with these ideas?
I just wonder how someone gets to be on a show that has them travelling around the country or even around the world. I want to do that.

They tend to go for people with extreme eccentricity or temperament - the travel sounds great but having to make a fool of yourself by eating cockroaches in front of thousands of viewers is not for me. I'd never do it and I hate watching such shows.

Those aren't the shows I am talking about - competition shows. I'm talking about people come out of no where to host shows on random things, or maybe not so random. Not contestants. I know contestants have to have a good background story, have personality and even some quirkiness.

@patgalca Well you have to look for agencies so they'd help you during auditions and casting calls. That's how it's usually done. Or you can search online on your own but of course beware of scammers if you take that route.

@patgalca I think it's fun to be on a reality show. Depends on what kind of show of course.
Anyway yeah, I got that. I just wanted to share how they probably got into those shows is all. And also how you(or your daughters) can get into one just in case you seriously consider it one day.

I didn't know that there are those crazy shows until recently! My boyfriends has pay-TV with some american channels and now I can't stop watching them. I don't know how you can get a show like that if you are not already famous. I am guessing that you should be the best at what you do and prove to the network that people will actually watch the show.
