Can You Meditate on Your Own?

I have a thing with meditation... It's either I'm not sure if I'm doing it right or I just don't find the time to do it. I always think about doing it properly but until now I haven't done it seriously. It always feels like I'm doing it wrong whenever I do it.
I've watched all the vids online and all the articles I can to meditate easily and in a short span of time but here I am still doing zilch.
Meditation is said to help each of us find or get back on our path. It allows us to clear our minds and be able to welcome any advice from our higher self easily. The helpful insights may come to us in different ways but the outcome should be for us to develop into better human beings.
Too bad I can't seem to meditate the way other people do. To each his own right so I should find a way to comfortably meditate in my own way. Wonder when I'll be able to learn/do that.
Anyway, anybody else having trouble meditating?
Do you do it regularly? Or have you ever meditated at all?

As a Christian, I meditate on the word of God for it is how He talks with me and pray and commune with Him in a very personal way. That is my way of meditation and I have no problem doing it.
I have no idea about the meditation being done by other beliefs though.

Meditation usually is done by sitting still (mostly in an Indian position, cross legged) and not thinking about too many things. Some say you just concentrate on breathing. Not an expert on it though.

I also meditate on the Word of God. I think my time is better spent praying to God than opening myself to other religions.

I think I was in the same position as you, and I took a course about Zen/Chan/Buddhism meditation a few months ago. It really helped me to understand how to meditate. I think there might be different types of meditations, but we use a cushion to sit on, not fully but only partly (less than half), and trying to get our knees touching the ground (we put another thin layer cushion on the floor, so our knees are actually touching this cushion).
I think this sitting method is important to me, as it helps me to sit longer, and my back seems to be straighter. I can just feel the whole body is straight and upright with this sitting position.
Sometimes when I don't have these cushions purposely made for Chan meditation, I just get a pillow or cushion, fold it into half, and sit partly on it. It works the same for me too.
Then, it started with relaxing our body, watching our breath, and sometimes using the "breath counting" method to keep us focus. I will try to look for the information online if I can find any. The one I am reading is Chinese, I'll see if I can find English version. Hopefully it'll help you to understand better.
I also do another type of meditation, guided meditation, which I learned from another mothering group. I play the guided meditation audio, then someone is guiding me what to do (to relax, to imagine) with some background music. This guided meditation works for me too.
I have heard a lot about this - Oprah & Deepak meditation experience, but I haven't really learn about it yet. They are always having 21 day meditation experience for free, you can check out the website at
I think Dr Wayne has some information about meditation in his blog too, you can also check them out.
I have always been wanting to practice meditation because I know it really helps me, but I always finding excuses as I don't have time for it. In September, I am planning to practice 3 times 10-minute meditation every day (it's actually an "assignment" from the mothering group I mentioned). I still haven't build it a habit, sometimes I do 3 times, but sometimes only 2. At least, I am moving to there...
I wish I can share more, as I am learning and practicing meditation lately. Hope you'll find the way that can fit into your life. I think different people may find different method that suit them, some people find doing yoga is good. I like yoga too.

@owstalaga I like the meditation I learned from the Buddhism meditation I mentioned - It's from Dharma Drum Mountain. There are also other Buddhism, but I think this resonates with me better, and with my husband too. (It's actually my husband who recommended this to me)
I have found this website of Dharma Drum Mountain, you can explore the website and find if there are any information good for you.
There is a video section. Perhaps you can check out the video about 8 Moving Meditation there. There are also Walking Meditation & Sleeping Meditation.
You can also search for Dharma Drum Mountain, I found that there are also other English sites.
This explains more about the meditation: http://www.dharmadrumretreat.org/teachings.php?id=meditation
I actually haven't try out the Chopra Meditation, as I like Dharma Drum Mountain's method, so I just stick to it first, as I don't have much time to explore others yet.

Yeah I did read about your 3x a day meditation plan. I think you can definitely do it.
I've been planning to join some zen/buddhist meditation classes but like you I can't seem to bring myself to really get into it. It would be interesting to try all the different kinds of meditation until I find one that resonates with me.
There's even a one minute meditation guide I found some weeks ago! I think I was able to do that at least.
Anyway thanks! I'll check on that link and some others.

I have not tried meditating in many many years. I remember when I was a young girl seeing some girls do it at the bowling alley where I bowled in a youth league. I thought it was neat and started doing it at home in the privacy of my bedroom. It was very relaxing but it isn't something I would bother to do now. I had a lot more time back then and feel like I wouldn't want to waste any time on meditating when I could be doing something else.

I tried doing that exactly by watching a couple of videos. And if they dont kill me for this - I fell asleep
I realized that this is a better way to gain on some sleep (as I have very disturbed sleep patterns), so did try during night and that time nothing happened
Maybe they need me to sleep early morning... and I do that already

I already noticed that you were meditating a lot before suggesting a discussion
.
I pray, but I don't know how to meditate. I would be interested to take a class to try, as I have some serious subjects of meditation waiting. I give you one.

Hahaha, is it because of the mandalas? Somehow I found a way didn't I?
I would love to take a class too but I don't think I will.
I have that movie but it somehow bored me not even half way thru. But I'll watch the clip.

I haven't done much meditating in while. But with my girls in preschool, I may have a little more time, so I'd like to try and do more. But I'm not sure how it's going to work out. I sometimes procrastinate with doing some things. I'll definitely try.

I have never done it or try to do it. I am not good with concentration. I get distracted easily. Some of my friends do it and they say it eases their stress. And I'm like, really? LOL! I don't even pray inside my head, I say my prayers out loud together with my children but I do it wholeheartedly.

hehe, they say it is good for total peace of mind. I've gotten my peace of mind another way but I feel I haven't achieved that stage of total peace and love so I'd love to give meditation some time if only I'd let myself do it.

Oh that's one way to meditate too I think. Spending time in nature is one of the best ways to be "connected" to life and other things.
