How to overcome such grief?

At the moment I feel like I'm the most terrible pet owner in the world. I have allowed myself to own a pet without spaying it and in fact tried breeding, and it was a big mistake! Alexis, our pretty black, long haired dachshund died last Sunday. We brought her to the vet after she gave birth prematurely on Friday. We actually already scheduled her whelping at the vet supposedly on September 5th because she's expected to whelp on the 9th. However, three days before her schedule, she showed signs of labor. The litter died because it was to young to even survive. In fact it was a stillborn and Alexis became weak after that so we had to bring her to the vet. Sunday morning I got a call from our vet telling us she passed away and she acquired Parvo Virus. It was quite strange that at her adult age, with a complete vaccine, she was infected. Vet explained there's a 1-5% chance of that. The whole family was devastated as we didn't expect her to leave us so soon. Now we have a 3-month old siberian husky with us to ease our pain, but nothing can replace Alexis in our hearts. She will be missed.

It happens, not your fault. You did what you had to do by taking her to the vet. There are many out there that would nt do that.. Dont let it bother you... Im sure she had a great life with you there..Pets are the best friends..

She was very well taken care of. Thanks for comforting me. I know most of the dog advocates would have condemned me for attempting to breed when I am just a pet owner.

It is quite devastating indeed. The loss of a pet - in any case - is. We had a pet and it has been 15+ years now that she has left us, but I am still mourning her loss. I cannot and will not have any more pets for me. It is all good and a great thing to have pets, but then, there are things that my heart cannot bear. We grown ups can still bear the pain, but when I think about your son, I am sure he would be feeling more miserable - as he would have been more attached to Alexis. I was 26 when Poppy passed away, but I still miss her. RIP Alexis.

About 5 years ago we also lost our dear shih tsu, Grumble and it took us about three years to have another one and it was Alexis. The loss of Grumble was painful as well because it was due to an accident. And we all thought we won't be getting another one. But we all felt empty and lonely when we come home and no dogs are there to meet and greet us.

I used to have two shih tzus standard size from Chicago. One has a microcihp but one time he was able to get out of the gate and was hit by a bus. He was my beloved black and white tzu, Grumble. The other one, Gary, was stolen. Both were neutered as part of the contract that I had with the breeder. You have lovely shih tzus!

Im so sorry about your loss. That is a lot to take in all at once. I hope the new husky eases your pain somewhat. I know the new pet will never ever be a replacement, but I do hope it will help you heal and let you love again.

Thank you, Danielle! Blizzard is such a sweet husky and we love him as much as we love Alexis. Though they really didn't get along well at first, Alexis somehow said goodbye to Blizzard before she went to the vet. They had a love and hate relationship.

Thank you for the words of comfort. Sometimes our husky would look for our dachshund and it would bring tears to my eyes again.
