What Dark Comedy? (Birdman Movie Review)

Ok so humor me. I've never enjoyed black comedy maybe because I never find it funny. Which might be the point exactly, right? I just watched Birdman and yes technically it is a good movie. For one it seems to be shot continuously, and it is said to have had long takes during filming. Second, Edward Norton is a really good actor! Especially when he and Michael Keaton were rehashing the lines in the play, that was awesome. And lastly this is the first time I've seen Zach Galifianakis not acting like a retard or weird in a movie (think The Hangover or What Happens in Vegas) which is so refreshing. With regards to the musical score, well it was kind of bothersome because of all the drumming going on. Overall, for me it was an okay movie. It's pretty weird how they dealt with suicide and schizophrenia though. On a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest, I give this movie a 2. Why? Well, can't say I like the story but then again as a scene in this movie goes, it's too easy to be a critic since I've got nothing to lose. I better watch a real comedy instead of anything from this genre if I want a belly ache. So anyway, if you watched the movie, where's the humor again? If you haven't seen it, do you like watching shows that are of what they call black comedy or dark humor genre?

I saw this movie after the Oscars, and honestly speaking I too didn't enjoy this movie much. The humour is still not the problem for me. The problem for me is the ending of the movie. I just don't get it. What just happened in the end?

Yeah it's a really cliffhanging ending. I read in Wikipedia they changed the original ending to what's in the film so it's all weird and wonky. The writers said we should draw our own conclusions.

@owstalaga How are we supposed to draw a conclusion when its premises itself is so confusing. When in the last scene Emma Stone looks up from the window, then what should we conclude- that Michael Keaton actually has superpowers or that he actually fell down but his daughter is so dumb that she doesn't know how gravity works (maybe that was the HUMOUR in the movie) :)

@Shine10Mathew oh you gave the ending away. I dunno what the writers would like the ending to mean. Maybe it's just a more foggier version of how Inception's ending is.

Comedy? I never even considered Birdman to be a comedy. I see it more as a cerebral drama. And yes, I liked it. I give it about a 3.5 on your 1-5 scale. Of course, I was married to an actress for 20 years so I've had a lot of exposure to the deep and dark thespian world, which helped in my appreciation of the movie. Most everyone I've talked to in regard to the movie just didn't get it or like it. While I thought the movie was good, I felt there were better movies that came out the same year. Getting the Best Picture Oscar, in my opinion, was very political because everyone voting are members of the aforementioned thespian world and it was a nod of recognition to Broadway and live theatre, the soil from which the tree of Hollywood grew. I agree with you that the drumming was a bit much. I also agree that it was nice to see Zach Galifianakis without a joint in his mouth or liquor bottle in his hand.

Oh it must be cool to be married to an actress. I mean it should be easy for them after all those years to be anybody right? Somehow I find it hard to be someone other than who I am so really salute actors who can do it without losing themselves. I think it is the best "actors' movie" I've seen so far. Not that I've seen anything else though.

@owstalaga - "An actor's movie." That is a perfect way to describe it! Exactly. BTW, the ex-wife was very talented and could easily become just about any character but she could not write a character. As a writer, I wrote and created characters but I can't act my way out of a paper bag. That may sound like a good match but we never collaborated on anything. We could live together & love together but we could never work together. We did, however, create a daughter together who has extraordinary acting ability but who hates reading and writing. I'm not sure how that happened.
