Pub sign study – The George And Dragon – Cheadle – Stockport

pub sign - The George And Dragon, Cheadle, taken by me

An iron carving sign with some artistry, depicting George lancing an endangered species to death to get himself a sainthood. It is a beautiful work of craftsmanship on a sign for a pub closed for many years but recently re-opened.

I cannot really imagine a dragon being an endangered species. So far I have only ever heard of one being killed and that has never been proven.

Beyond endangered then, as thanks to George and Bilbo they may well be extinct.

@arthurchappell If they truly are extinct then we will be unable to celebrate 23rd April properly. Slaying a dragon on this day has become a long established English tradition.

@arthurchappell He did die on 23rd April, but I believe that his actual birthday is unknown.

So it is made of metal? Not painting on wood? No pub name.

An interesting bit of artwork. Gruesome, yet uplifting.
