That expresion for those of us in the southern hemisphere has been around for a couple of hundred years, when settlers set off from the northern hemisphere, sailing to the bottom of the world. New Zealand is also down under

The term was coined in Britain when Australia and New Zealand were colonies. It only ever refers to Australasia, never to South Africa, presumably because, if you standing in Britain, then Australia and New Zealand are directly below your feet. Probably part of the reason for the term was that Australia was a penal colony, so 'Down Under' was a euphemism for having been sentenced to penal servitude in the colonies. There are plenty of similar euphemisms for 'being in prison'. The term has stuck, mainly because Australians (but not so much New Zealanders, I think) often refer to their country as being 'Down Under'. Now, of course, it has long since lost the meaning of being detained 'at Her Majesty's Pleasure' in a penal colony!

@mkrnex A 'penal colony' is a colony where criminals were sent instead of going to prison. When there, they had to do hard labour but usually work which benefited the colony, such as farming, road building and the many other trades which are needed to maintain a community. There were guards, of course, and it was difficult to escape (though some did). In those days, you could be sent to Australia for crimes as minor as stealing a sheep or a loaf of bread, even. We have a Queen now, of course, and Queen Victoria was in power for most of the time that people were sent as convicts to Australia, so it seemed appropriate to say 'at the Queen's Pleasure' rather than 'at the King's Pleasure'. I think that we have actually had more kings than queens: it just happens that both Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria have been our two longest serving monarchs!

The reason why it is called "Down Under" is because the European explorers were looking for a continent or land below Asia!! Before being known as Australia and New Zealand, it was known as Terra Australis, i.e., Unknown Southern Land!! So you see Australia kind of itself means Southern Land, hence the origin of the phrase "Down Under"
