Mutual funds are good however if you choose to invest into equity funds then be mindful. Make sure that you invest 50% equity fund and rest into PPF, debt fund, fixed deposit. That being said, you should diversify the funding. That way you are not going to lose the money if the market goes up and down. Not that mid cap funds and large cap equity funds are risky and you should invest only if you have such money to spare into it.

@mkrnex I can't suggest which fund is right for you. However what I can tell you is, check out site named freefincal . com . As that site is good for learning how to get choose funds and how to allocate the funds to type of funds. Blue chip funds are good but risky and also fluctuate a lot. Instead make sure divide your 5K into two blocks get one debt fund and get one Franklin templeton large cap bluechp fund. Thats just suggestion. I advice you to meet a professional before finalizing the funds. Also don't take advice of the bank staff for selecting mutual funds.

My return is better than mutual funds, because I learn from reading books, and I invest prudently.
Nobody can take the money from me in the form of annual fee or whatever.
Mutual funds always have such annual fees, and even if they lose money for you, you still have to pay the fees.
