How do you choose Godparents for your kid?

Do you have specific reason of choosing Godparents for your kid? Aside from a fact that they are your siblings, relatives and friends? Is anybody here have chosen Godparents because you know that every Christmas that person will be the one who will give gifts even though you are not that close with that Godparent? Have you ever choose a Godparent that you are not totally close enough and why do you still choose that person to be your kid’s Godparent? I have to admit when hearing about Godparents the first thing on my mind is about a person who will give you a gift every Christmas and even your birthday, more so the one who will give you money. Good thing the homily of the priest enlightened me more about the idea of being a Godparent. It must be the Second parent of a kid or the one you would trust, and they are the one who will be responsible to teach moral values and faith or anything about God. They will guide the kid to the right direction in life. That homily became my inspiration that is why I have chosen my relatives and friends whom we trusted and I have reasons why I have chosen them. I wrote it on the souvenir on how much I acknowledge their acceptance for them to become Godparents. That is why during the event I am not really expecting for any gifts, and I want them to feel that being a Godparent is not about gifts. The gift that I want them to give for our baby is their positive attitude, uniqueness of them, and strength that can inspire to my daughter.

I imagine that different traditions treat this matter differently. In the Protestant west the notion of Godparents has either been abandoned or fallen into disrepute - with any notion of guiding the moral welfare of the child having been discarded long since.

So what is the objective of having Godparents in protestant?
