Well, service history for one, did the person take it to the dealer or service it themselves? Do they have a record of each oil change, brake job etc..... Make sure the service history matches (or exceeds) the manufacturers recommended service intervals. Check the web for any message boards that can tell you an weak points about the car make and model you are looking and keep that list in mind when visually inspecting the car and asking the current owner about condition. And the last overall step you could do is have a pre-purchase inspection by a mechanic.

You are right. But my experience with mechanics in India has not been very good. They invariably take you for a ride.

Buy from a reputable dealer, take a friend with you who has experience of buying cars and knows what to look for, check web pages where people will share stories of the bad things and cons to look out for. Good luck and happy, safe driving

We used to buy a second hand cars the first couple of times whe we could not afford new cars, but needed one badly, and loans were expensive and not easily available. I would, however, advice to go for a new car, as I feel that what extra amount you spend on EMIs can be compensated by not having to spend on maintenance.
