A pub name meaning The Arms Of Death seems rather morbid but lots of pubs have an association with death and funerals. Many pubs were used as makeshift mortuaries and places to keep bodies after industrial or road accidents and after bombing raids in the Blitz. They had cool cellars for the beer so they were handy to keep bodies as fresh as possible. Also, many people hold funeral wakes and post-burial drinking sessions in pubs, which gave ample chance for people to raise a glass or two to fallen friends or family. Arthur Chappell

I suppose that the pub is a large part of many people's lives, it only makes sense for it to be a part of their deaths as well.

@arthurchappell That is the tradition here in Latvia. Either having a gathering of friends at home after the burial or renting out a room in a pub or restaurant.
