What is the point of of going on a general knowledge quiz if you have no general knowledge?

It always amazes me, when watching quiz shows on TV, how often the contestants seem to know absolutely nothing! I don't think I would want to embarrass myself by displaying my ignorance in front of the watching millions, but some people don't seem to mind!

I am guessing that they just want to appear in the TV and maybe if they are lucky they might win a few money as well. Same thing happens with talent shows where untalented people participate just to become famous for a few seconds.

I think there's a lot in what you say. You have to go to the shows in which there is no cash prize to be won in order to find the "real" brains. We do have a few such shows in the UK.

@indexer Real brains go for the game and probably the competition too. I would like to know which shows you have that don't offer cash prize. I used to watch some British shows, I think I will enjoy watching something new.

@besweet Examples on the BBC include University Challenge, Mastermind and Only Connect. BBC Radio has Brain of Britain (on which I appeared many years ago but did not get beyond the first round!)

Ha, ha, sometimes I think it's just the luck of the draw as to what questions come up, and how much much logic you're able to apply to having a guess. I'm a great fan of The Chase

I agree, and the young people especially are so ignorant. They're ok with celebrities and popular culture, but try them on history etc. they don't even know the basics.

I can't tell you how many times I have watched a game show on TV where the contestants were idiots. Not knowing the answer to anything and me sitting at home answering every question(or most of the questions) correctly.
