Figure of 999 attracts you psychologically....

999 may be a deceptive sale

Many sellers on online internet services keep the prices of their product at like 4999 or 15999 giving a psychological advantage of attracting the buyers as if the prices are reduced by lot hundreds or thousand money whereas actually they have only reduced it by one. Therefore 5000 or 4999 have a psychological barrier

Yes - stupid isn't it? It never works for me - I always round the figure up so I know exactly what I'm paying!

I find it irritating, I have stopped buying from some online sites who display their prices like that, if I run into any of their reps I surely will take them to cleaners for this.

@amitajain wow! what an observation Actually its just psychological, as at the time of paying we are made to pay the rounded off amount only.

A renowned multinational shoe making company (I am not mentioning the name deliberately) used to tag their footwear like Rs.99, Rs.199 or Rs.999 to get psychological advantage. In olden days when even one Rupee was valuable in terms of purchasing power, then it used to make some sense. But now a days Rupee one does not matter much and people are smart enough to understand this trick so I do not think they get influenced by such figures.

@ashuli and @dpk262006 You are right the value of a rupee coin does not fetch much, but the next digit makes it to the next value of higher series of hundreds or thousands and there are lot many may get influenced by such tricks

The next number rounded up sounds higher to anyone buying the item.

As a student of Mathematics, I have been trained to look at a number dispassionately. To me, 999 always means 1000-1. It never occurs to me that 999 is a 3-digit number whereas 1000 is a 4-digit number. However, I do admit that many people generally face this psychological barrier and companies take undue advantage of this.
