Tomorrow, Fergus and I are off to care take my friends' beautiful 175 acre farm and collie dog stud for 5 days. We mind the farm every month or two when my friends go to dog shows or on holidays. My friends have 16 collies of varying ages. They usually take 4 dogs to show, entrusting the other 12 to my care. The dogs that don't go to shows get to live happy lives on the farm, just playing and hanging out with their friends and extended families. Most of them are now in retirement, although a few provide occasional stud services. Not a bad life. This time, my friends are having a short holiday so I have all 16 dogs to look after. I know 12 of the dogs very well and am looking forward to getting to know the other 4. It is amazing that with so many dogs, no 2 are alike. They all have such different personalities - and are different enough in appearance that they are easy to tell apart. It is lucky that I CAN tell them apart because they only answer and obey if you call them by the right name. On the few occasions I have called a dog the wrong name, he or she has just stood and looked at me as if to say "Not my name. Get it right". I consider myself fortunate to spend time with the dogs and don't even mind cleaning up after them. They are so loving and truly warm my heart. I can't imagine life without animals. Can you?
