My Mum Got Hostile With Me Over My New Job

With my new job starting tomorrow, I was looking forward to telling my Mother but she was talking relentlessly while we ate our tea. She started talking of her own voluntary work, as a Victim Support worker with the courts, dropping several sarcastic hints about how easily she got into the role despite being 75 and retired from paid work. Alarm bells were ringing, as I knew she was gearing up to one of her frequent hints that I am not trying hard enough to find work. She suggested I get a voluntary work role so I can get paid work later on. I told her I have done voluntary work, and that my new paid proper job starts tomorrow. I thought she’d be pleased. Instead I got an ugly backlash about how it’s about time, and my first job in 30 years, despite my last job finishing only two months ago, and several jobs before that. I threw my knife and fork down and stormed out of the room. So sad and upsetting that what should be a positive day turned so needlessly ugly over absolutely nothing. Arthur Chappell
