The New Job Postponed - my fault

Had big problems getting to the new workplace in time. To be fair it was largely self-inflicted. The warehouse is very isolated a long way from the nearest public transport stop, and as it was 8 weeks since my interview and the job offer (with an unspecified start date), I was unsure which path was the best to reach the only staff entrance.
On my previous visit I’d arrived by bus. This time I used the tram and the terrain looks very different. I ended up on a footpath that led past and round the warehouse. Seeing as I was running late I phoned in, but only hit an answering machine. In desperation I decided to cut across country, on marshy overgrown paths that were probably last stepped on by the druids. I eventually completed the arduous journey and found that my bag with much of my property in it had come off my shoulder in the undergrowth.
As I was late anyway I searched for it for a while and then went into the warehouse through a ridiculously paranoid level of screening that makes me think they might be a cover for MI5. Passcards, two security officials, and in one area a retinal scan for the security men.
The team preparing my induction were waiting at a table in the middle of an otherwise empty room the size of a gymnasium. I told them what had happened and that I really needed to find my bag again. I suggested they postpone my induction until they are taking on the next intake for the shift, which is a horrid four days on four days off pattern, for a part time role . They reluctantly agreed.
I retraced my steps through the swamp-woods and after about an hour, feeling very thirsty, (my drinks for the day being in the bag) I finally spotted my bag buried under heather that seems to have virtually grown round it. I actually stood on the bag before I saw it, or I might not have ever found it. Horrible and now my mum will probably think I made up the whole interview story just to stop her baleful rant that I’m not searching hard enough for work. “”I’m 75 and I got in with Victim Support easily, so you should be able to find work even easier with your qualifications.

Life always seems to produce such horrendous situations at the most inconvenient times.
I can still remember my first day working in Crumpsall. I was telephoned and asked to start on the 2 till 10 shift that day. Since I was still living in Bolton at the time, I had no idea where the factory actually was and caught the wrong bus. Despite after setting out from home very early, I arrived around 2-30 PM due to having a long and uncertain walk.
Fortunately I had previously worked for the company while they were based in Bolton, so I was already well known by all. As a result the manager simply found it amusing, but had I been a total newcomer it could have been catastrophic for me.

great that they were so understanding for you there - I remember turning up at one interview dripping wet as I got caught in the most torrential rain I've ever experienced on the way in. I didn't have an umbrella. The employers just looked at me as if I'd swam in down a canal despite only having to look out the window to see the weather conditions. I never got the job.

Well, that is the good thing about being highly qualified. Most likely they can't find to many people to fill the role. First days at any new job always seem to go wrong. It is like we are all destined to leave bad impressions.

@arthurchappell I don't know. After you went through all that if you happen to get a job there I think you should find a simple way to get to the warehouse and home again. You certainly won't have time all day to go through something like that. Too bad they don't give their employees work cars.

They will have to teach me to drive first before giving me a car, but I do now know the safe easy route in.
