What is your earliest memory?

This morning I was trying to stretch my memory and see how far I could reach in the crevices of my mind. My earliest memory is of myself standing at a window in our house and crying because I wanted to go to school with my brother. I was about two and a half years old. My brother who was about four, smartly dressed with his school bag on his shoulder would go to school and I felt that it was very unfair that I was not allowed to go too It would be interesting to know what your first memories of childhood are. Please do share.

My erliest memory is of being across a street with my older brother playing shoot at the cars with our fingers and it starting to rain and we had to run but the ground by then was muddy and I lost one of shoes and started to cry, I was only 3 years old so my brother had to console me until we got home. Then my mama said it's okay you have other shoes cause I liked my shoe. By the way I was not allowed to cross that street on my own and I never did.

Must have been quite traumatic, particularly if it was a favourite shoe

@Shyamalaa It must have been as I remember crying so hard it almost made me sick. I remember my mother consoling me for what seemed like a long time. My father was at work but I remember telling him when he came home about my shoe and that mud that wanted to get me but brother wouldn't let it.

My earliest memory! Really very interesting. It is related to Indo-Pak War! During the blackout of 1965 war, some people of my locality started using a cover to the electric bulb (Tube light was not known at that time), so that the light doesn't get scattered, but only the floor just below the bulb was illuminated. Same tactics was applied prior to 1971 war. My first memory is about the night (in 1971-I was less than 4 at that time) when I was asking my mother why this was done and my mother was explaining the reason. I have recalled the incidence just after seeing this discussion!

@Shyamalaa My DoB is 30th October, 1967. No, I was not at all scared. My mother told me that these Pakistanis were torturing innocent people, so definitely they would be defeated. Later I understood that my parents were very much worried at that time about our relatives who were in East Pakistan/Bangladesh.

How old were you? Were you scared? I remember those days too. Only I was too young to understand the dangers of war. All I felt was excitement at having to hide under the table till the siren stopped!

My earliest memories are when I used to go to market with my Grand father in his lap. He used to buy me a long oval shape toffee on every visit. I may be 4 years old at that time.

My Earliest memory is may be I was 2 and half years old that time my mother was carrying my sister in her womb so she was feeling difficult to take care of me all the time because i was too naughty and our neighbors used to play with me when my dad was away for work. I remember neighborhood kids carrying me around to shops or their friends home and play with me and get me chocolates and juices when they are back from school or colleges. I still remember their names and how they look.

A lovely observation! The first of my memories could be of traveling on a bus. I can't recall the full details of it. But it is a beautiful memory.

@Shyamalaa In fact, I have been blessed to have very caring and doting parents. Even today, some of those golden memories of my child hood are enough to lift my spirits, when I am down.

I remember turning 2 and thinking "I just doubled my age. If this keeps up, by the time I'm 6 I'll be 90"! (Steven Wright) lol

For me the earliest memory was arriving at our new home in 1966, when I was 4 and seeing the back garden - we had no garden at the old house so it was quite magical to see that.

@Shyamalaa I love seeing a good garden though I have no gardening skills. My garden now has astro-turf lawn and concrete patios.

Has the love for gardens persisted with you?

As for me, I can still imagine the time when our youngest in the family was born. She followed me in birth order. My birth year is 1954 and she was born 1957. To be exact I was 2 years and 6 months old that time.

@Shyamalaa,my earliest memory is that of the day when I had reached the nearest primary school with my collection of pieces of chalk and a broken slate.I still remember the teacher had greeted me and taken me in his lap.My father got me admitted in the school the next day.

I wished I had something good to share but I do not. I was around 5 or 6yrs old, I was sleeping and loud noises woke me up. I climbed down out of my bunk bed to the living room and here my father was on top of my mother choking her. I beat on his back and yelled for him to stop so he did. Then I remember going to the sink to get a glass of water and I had to stand on my tippy toes, so I gave my mother a drink to try to help her. That's all I remember about that.

My brother was born when I was three and a half years old, my earliest memory is of where we lived before he was born. I would be somewhere between two and a half and three years old.

That must have been disappointing! Only a child can be so unselfish as to share a prized possession!
