Do you take politicians of your country at face value? There was a time when I used to do exactly that.As time passed,I read books, came in direct contact with some local politicians and then gradually realized the difference between what they say and what they do.Disbelief set into my mind.I grew mature. Now I don't believe them. I believe in my own experiences,in what I see for myself. What about you?

Politicians play politics. They say what they want to say to entice people to vote for them, after that they do whatever they want to, even if it's the exact opposite of what they say. The only time you get something different is when they are outside the system of politics, and say what they mean (which upsets people because they aren't honey-coating their words). I would rather have someone upsetting people and doing a good job than the other way.

@OneOfMany,I have seen some local politicians who served as the right hand for their boss at the top in their private moments. And what I saw and heard was disgusting. There was a world of difference between what they showed themselves to be in public and what they actually are.Such eye opening experiences led me to maturity and now I have long ceased to be a blind follower of any politician.

@gregario888 I've dealt with a US presidential candidate in the past in person. When I took him up on what he had said a few minutes before he got annoyed that I had done exactly what he said to do, and basically told me to go away. I got very verbal with him, and told him he'd never be president. To this day he never has been.

I'm not a fan of politics for lots of reasons, including what you've mentioned.

@else34 I wouldn't go as far as saying that about politics in New Zealand, but they do forget their promises quickly at times.

@valmnz Our newly elected PM Narendra Modi has not forgotten the promises he had made in the run up for the election, but he has to fight on multiple fronts. His detractors are taking undue advantage of the ruling BJP's weakness in the Upper House.Modi is a honest PM dedicated to his country's fast progress.

@valmnz,No honest person can be their fan.99.99 % of them are cheaters and frauds,to say the least. And the rest 0.1% fall under the species of 'those on the brink of extinction.'

With politics it is always best to read between the lines, see what the critics say and never take anything at face value - it won't all be lies (some will) but much will amount to propaganda and sales pitch.

@arthurchappel,absolutely right. It will be naive to believe in what they say.We need to understand their intentions. And intentions can be understood by reading between the lines and seeing their track record.

@else34 Yes Jaishankar! Our politicos, are a bane for us Indians. Wish we had a different lot to cope with. This lot is the worst of all.

@gregario888 I can't agree more. You are right. But you can't rule out the apprehensions of this 'different lot' turning into the same politicos in future.Power corrupts,we know very well.

@marlina,if you are predisposed to think twice before backstabbing those who believe you, then you can't be a politician.

I think politicians may tell a truth, part of a truth, or none of it, it's all suspect.

They can be misleading. Even untruthful, at times.
