The last five of the 150 Psalms in The Old Testament have a simple shared message of the importance of praying, and praising God as much as possible. 146 points out the uselessness of praying to anyone but God as only he is listening. Others might suggest he isn’t listening either.
147 reminds everyone of God as the creator of the universe, controller of the weather and champion of the Chosen Jewish people in their hours of need (though much of the troubles is due to God punishing them himself).

I can't help but wonder why an atheist would study the Bible. It won't ever make any sense to you unless you believe and ask the Lord for guidance and wisdom.

Without at least reading the Bible it would be unfair for any atheist to take a critical oppositional stance on it. You don't have to believe something to read it.

Actually, there are figures of speech and idioms and Orientalisms throughout the Bible. Unless and until people understand this it makes it very difficult to understand. The majority of the Bible can be understood while reading, but what many don't realize is that an idiom of permission is used in the Old Testament.
God is good always, He never undermines nor takes away a person's free will. Nor is he the instigator of calamity and the bad things that happen to people back then and in this day and time. The adversary is the cause of all of that as it says in John 10:10a. The thief, (Satan, the devil, Lucifer), cometh not but for to steal and to kill and to destroy...
The Old Testament believers didn't comprehend the spirit world, therefore that part of the Bible is written as if God did all those things. But he didn't. He is good always. I praise him as much as I can. I'd like to praise him constantly, but I do forget. I know I praise him more now that I used to. He keeps me out of harms way and he'd could do more for me if I'd listen and follow the steps as he directs, but since we have free will I don't always do it his way, but my own and then I may step into dog do do or worse.
God is not the controller of the weather. He does listen and answer prayer and can and will do more than we ask or think, He is worthy of our praise. If you choose to disbelieve, that's of course your choice, but you are missing out.
