Volunteerism…have you ever noticed you are asked to volunteer when no one else will? I think there is a reason for that. Volunteers go through burn out! Do-gooders get tired of being used, disrespected, and treated differently.
I volunteered as:
A teacher’s aide once upon a time and they assigned me 4 teachers, the teachers that asked for the help overloaded me with work and I ended up working longer hours than they did .Why? Because no one else wanted to help them…they are over worked and there just is not enough money in the educational system to pay for teacher’s aides for all the teachers that need one. Burn Out!
A sports mom/coach...it was fun for a while, but the hectic schedule of practice, games and fundraisers-Burn Out!
Community Economic Development Volunteer- interesting, hectic, lots of researching, writing, filing for grants that do not qualify for government monies without certain foundations in place Phases I,II,III no one sticks around long enough to follow through on the legwork-Burn Out!
Community Clubs-events, fundraisers, work days, dues, charity, need deep pockets for most of these-Burn Out
Most of the church volunteerism is pretty good, there are enough people in the church to step up to the plate, when burn out sets in.
I think that volunteerism, non-profit and charity has a place in our society, but it should not interfere with free enterprise and the right for individuals to be paid and are entitled by the constitution to make a living. Many formerly paid jobs in the government are turning toward volunteerism to meet the demands of the workplace. Some government programs require a certain amount of hours of volunteerism to receive benefits.
How do you feel about volunteerism?

That is awesome...I actually like a little volunteer work myself. AWANA, General Federation Womans Club, and some other community projects...but I have met people that have had bad experiences so they will not volunteer anymore...kind of sad.

I think volunteering is great when it's done willingly. Making people do a few hours of volunteer work as part of whatever program is great, but I know cases in which people were subjected to disciplinary action for not participating in those activities. I personally don't think that it's the right thing to do. It just defeats the whole idea of volunteerism.

I agree... because volunteering willingly is supposed to give a person self confidence and self worth, for some people it is meaningful and is their passion. Being forced into volunteering is more of a punishment and can be very humiliating, frustrating and demeaning, especially if disciplinary actions are used.
