My friend hit a porcupine and ruined her tires

I am shocked by this. A friend of mine posted on facebook that she hit a porcupine on her brand new car. She said that the quills are stuck in it and leaking air so she needs to buy new tires now. I am truly shocked. I never would have thought that quills would be strong enough to pierce a tire on a vehicle. She said it happened to get brother before as well when he hit one years ago. I almost hit a couple porcupine once late at night about 10 years ago. I am thankful now that I didn't. They are interesting to watch. They are very slow. The lights on my car blinded them so they stood there on their hind legs waving their upper bodies back and forth looking at me. I beeped the horn and they still wouldn't move. I had to turn the lights out to get them to be able to see to get out of the road. It was three big ones. They stood nearly as tall as the hood of my car.
