My friend hit a porcupine and ruined her tires

I am shocked by this. A friend of mine posted on facebook that she hit a porcupine on her brand new car. She said that the quills are stuck in it and leaking air so she needs to buy new tires now.
I am truly shocked. I never would have thought that quills would be strong enough to pierce a tire on a vehicle. She said it happened to get brother before as well when he hit one years ago.
I almost hit a couple porcupine once late at night about 10 years ago. I am thankful now that I didn't. They are interesting to watch. They are very slow. The lights on my car blinded them so they stood there on their hind legs waving their upper bodies back and forth looking at me. I beeped the horn and they still wouldn't move. I had to turn the lights out to get them to be able to see to get out of the road. It was three big ones. They stood nearly as tall as the hood of my car.

omg. What happened to the porcupine? Did it die? Or did the quills protect it in some way?
Wait, three big ones nearly as tall as the hood of your car? Wow! I didn't know porcupines can grow that big? Are they like big dogs in size then? I thought porcupines were only cute little mammals.
Good thing you didn't run over any of them then or you might have needed new tires too and I heard tires are expensive!

Now I'm sad for those poor porcupines... They should be kept off the roads...
Thanks for the explanation, really thought they get as big as big dogs...

Wow...
I knew their quills were pretty deadly to living things, but tires?

This was very shocking to me as well. I really don't think I could have believed it without seeing proof so I looked up online and sure enough there were pictures of tires with quills from porcupines stuck in them. I am very glad now that I have never hit any. I don't think they are actually deadly to living things just very painful to have to pull them out as they have like little hooks on the end of the quills that make them really difficult to remove. Dogs around here get face fulls of quills when they try to bite them.
