Bus Drivers Are The New Fare Dodgers

In Greater Manchester, bus services are introducing a scheme for drivers to avoid the necessity of giving customers the right change for their journeys. While advising passengers to have the right fare is fine, it is common for drivers to refuse to let passengers board when the drivers have no change though a few drivers do just let passengers ride for free or until later passengers give the driver enough change to be able to give the passengers the change back. The new scheme is to keep all the money offered by the passenger and give the passenger a receipt ticket the passenger can use on future bus rides either to pay for tickets on another bus or get change off the next driver of the next bus. This is so open to abuse it really should not be allowed. Many drivers will give the receipts out from sheer laziness. Actual change might be stolen by bus-officials, after all, it will be known how much a fare was but not necessarily how much additional cash has been paid. Fare dodgers will probably use forged and stolen change-receipts. Receipts could easily be lost or damaged by customers / passengers so their excess fares are never reimbursed. The bus company gets extra profit for nothing. Infrequent travellers may not need future bus rides for months while their change might be needed for other goods and services sooner. If a driver is expected to give change for a ride taken by passengers on other journeys on other buses, his own change supplies will deplete more quickly and passengers could end up accumulating fare receipts for some time before getting to redeem them. Fare receipts are unfair and unworkable. I hope this scheme gets run over by a bus soon. Arthur Chappell

This is the first that I have heard about this Arthur, but that may be because I rarely pay bus fares these days. I have had an old fool's pass for several years now and can travel free after 9-30 AM, although I would need to pay if I travelled earlier. This has obviously not been though out properly, or maybe the companies do not care about the public. Imagine a single mother taking her son to the hospital. If she only had a £10 note she may end up unable to buy a loaf and a bottle of milk on the way home.

I can see the thinking behind the scheme and how it came to be proposed and introduced. I agree that, because of lost, damaged or otherwise unclaimed receipts, it will tend to increase the bus company's takings, though I think it less likely that the receipts could be easily forged I see that there is a scarily long list of bus operators in GM. The main ones seem to be Arriva and First while most of the others appear to be coach and private hire operators. Nearly all of our public transport in Cambridge is operated by Stagecoach and all buses have an electronic pad for smart bus cards. Most of the people I've seen using these are people over 60 with free bus cards but it seems to me that the travel card system would speed up the time it takes to board and a card which could be topped up at any ATM or, maybe, at selected retail outlets or by phone would be a fairer solution than giving people receipts for overpayment of fares.

We have Stagecoach too - the best system I have seen is the London Oyster Card system - easy and quite economic to use too

they don't do cards yet? In japan you have a public transit card, it works on any public and all as far as I could tell, private transports, you load it with funds as you need. change is never an issue
