why do we believe in the end of the world?

there were numerous people who claimed they knew when the world would end. some people built shelters and stored food to protect themselves in such situations. my question is why do we believe that sooner or later this world would end?

Because all the legends and cultures have the end of the world prophesied. Why shouldn't we think about it if it's prevalent in our legends? I think we should take it positively, we will evolve and go into a higher plane. It would be best to be better persons everyday that we can so we won't be afraid to die when the time comes.

I have lost count of the number of times during my life that the world has been predicted to end. Strangely all these false alarms do not stop people believing the next prediction.
This planet will exist long after life here disappears because the Sun will eventually burn out and Earth will become a frozen planet.

@PhredWreck The rate at which the Earth is being drawn towards the Sun is extremely small, which will become smaller as the Sun gradually consumes itself and reduces it's own gravitational pull.
