I can see clearly now!

I wore thick glasses most of my life, but switched to contact lenses in the late 1980's. I well remember how liberating that was: no more heavy glasses pressing on my nose, being able to walk in the rain and see where I was going - it was wonderful! The biggest change was with other people. When you have very thick glasses, other people cannot see your eyes. Consciously or unconsciously, people don't like that. It makes them slightly uncomfortable and they may not even realize why. From the very first day I started wearing contacts, that all changed: people smiled at me more, were friendlier. I was very happy. But as I aged, the contact lenses became more difficult for me. They bothered my eyes more and I began to have to wear reading glasses to work at my computer. That just got worse and worse and I gave them up entirely about ten years ago. A few weeks ago I found an old box of lenses in my closet with a few left in it. I threw them away, but they made me wonder if there was anything new in contact lens technology that might make it possible for me to wear them again. I sent email to my eye doctor to ask him. He replied immediately that although this had not been possible until recently, I could now get daily wear contact lenses for astigmatism. Daily wear is thinner and more comfortable. He asked me to come in for a quick exam and fitted me with a trial set of daily Acuvue Moist for Astigmatism. Wow! Comfortable and better vision than I had with my glasses. The vision improvement comes partly from better peripheral vision but also because thicker lenses make the world slightly darker. With contacts, everything is brighter. These also fit better. The contacts I had years ago did not always line up correctly and I'd have to blink hard or even rub my closed eye gently to get them to reorient correctly - these new lenses align themselves without my noticing. Amazingly, I can use these at my computer without reading glasses! I love these new contacts. If you gave up on contacts years ago, check with your doctor. You may find there is new technology for your eyes too!

I had worn thick glasses for years, but I didn't like them as they did me no good. I kind of thought i had cataracts, as I just couldn't see to well, even with my glasses. I went to the eye doctor, and I was right. I had really bad cataracts and they needed to be removed, so they scheduled my first surgery. I was apprehensive at first, but there was nothing to it. Three weeks later I had the other eye done. I don't need glasses except for reading. I see the world differently that is for sure.

That's interesting, though I only started to need glasses in my late forties, and only for reading. Are your contact lenses good for both close-up and distance?

@pcunix What? One eye for each? That sounds so bizarre!

They are tuned for distance, but I find I can work comfortably with my computer and iPad. If I had to do a lot of reading, I'd use reading glasses or switch to my bifocal glasses.

But you can also get them with one eye for distance and one for closer. Some like those.

I got contacts as soon as I could, because I hated glasses so much. But like you, I ended up needing reading glasses at work to see the computer and the print on paperwork. But now I simply go without either. It is rare that I can't see well enough to do whatever task I am doing and I don't bother with the contacts or the glasses. As you age, the cornea flattens out a bit so I am not nearly as near-sighted as I once was.

There are lots of new possibilities to improve eyesight. Some people get eye surgery with very good results, but I don“t know whether it works on astigmatism

@pcunix I know a young girl who saved her salary for months for the surgery. She says it was worth it

@marguicha yes, I'm sure it would be. We're mostly retired now and although I could find the money for that, I'd rather save it so we don't run out of money later,

It can, and they are able to do more now than they could a few years ago, but I'm not willing to spend that much money on it.

Wearing glasses not wanting contact lenses. But I have cataracts now and will need surgery in less than a year. Apparently one sees really well after the surgery. Glad that you are happy.

I will have to think about them again. I had a similar experience. About 10 years ago, they just started irritating my eyes. I haven't been happy with my glasses in a long time. I have to take them off and put them on constantly, because I don't need them to read.

Doesn't hurt to ask. I'm really impressed with these. They are expensive (about $2 a pair), but I only wear them when we go out, so they'll last a while.

@pcunix I used to wear the ones that you throw out every night. I am a little paranoid about eye infections.

I gave up on contacts years ago. I also suffer from astigmatism in one of my eyes. Even with the contacts made especially for astigmatism I still had lots of problems. Since they have improved over the years I might check them out the next time I go in for an exam. Of course now since I have aged I am now wearing bifocals and I would be afraid that contacts are out due to that. Since you have brought the subject up I must now go research.
