Photo Taking For My Mylot Pages

Photo – buses, taken by me.

So many people seem to want to fall back on stock-photos or even try to use copyrighted images when digital cameras are everywhere. It seems impossible to even buy a phone without a camera on it nowadays. With many recurring themes, topics and motifs in my articles here I spent part of yesterday creating more photos of things and places around Manchester that I seem to refer to a lot. I added a few inn signs, mostly of pubs that have recently changed their signs. As I often gripe about public transport I took some photos of buses. I review films so I took shots of two cinemas I frequent. I love walking round, pointing and clicking with my cameras. I got a few church yards, the cathedral, our biggest city skyscrapers, churches, a theatre, and the main St. Peter’s Square war memorial too. The image used here is one of today’s bus photos. Back when myLot had interest categories and allowed us to post photos to them, I would take my camera out and shoot exclusively with the intent to upload them here when I got home. I'm ashamed to say that none of them were anywhere near the quality I take now, but it was enjoyable and definitely helped me figure out exactly how much I enjoyed photography when I was first getting started.

@yukimori images used here don't have to be artistic masterpieces though many I see clearly are. An image just needs to catch the reader's attention and give a clue to what the writer is talking about. The text is still what matters most of course. Sometimes I still have no apt images or I'm posting on other computers such as those in the libraries in which case the features still have no photos added.

I like just walking around taking pictures of things around me. Different buildings and cars etc.

@jstory07 I love seeing vintage cars - so classy. That would have certainly got me reaching for my cameras too

@arthurchappell That car belongs to a friend of mine. I get to ride in it sometimes.

Every picture, they say, tells a story. There are many reasons, of course, for taking photographs and, I suppose that one basic 'story' behind a picture might be why you took it in the first place. I must say that, looking at some of my photos, I can't say much more than 'because I had my camera with me and the subject must have caught my eye' or even 'I've forgotten!'. I have so many photos now since I acquired my first digital camera in 2000 that many of them must fall into the above category. However, if I were to go through them, I should really be able to find some kind of story in many of them and nearly every story might interest someone and become the topic of a conversation ... or discussion ... the 'art', I suppose, is in being interested and curious enough in anything that one can arouse the same interest and curiosity in others.

I can usually tell where and in what context most of my photos were taken though with shots from cabaret shows I don't always know which performer is which

My garden provides enough subjects for me to fill my photos folder to the brim

great if you have a lot to work with in a close area - it is possible to take shots of the same thing over and over and still get a different photo every time and a garden is obviously going to change over the seasons and growth cycles too

I've done that before, worked on setting aside a group of photos for my stuff. I refuse to use others photos.

with a digital camera and an imagination, we can always get our own images

@Jessicalynnt I have used Paint for very basic images but my artistic skills are limited sadly

@crazyhorseladycx yes even my library of photos lets me down - hence the photo-walk yesterday. I went through articles and titles looking at key words I can base images on - I have more to gather yet too.

@arthurchappell the past few years i fear i aint organized any'f my shots - somethin' i was most strict with prior to fallin' ill. now, they're jest scattered 'bout by date taken. like i'd recall what happened when/where, lol. perhaps this winter i'll get back to sortin' 'em out 'n slappin' 'em into categories whilst they'll be easier to hunt down.

I enjoy seeing pictures taken by MyLot users to illustrate their posts. Keep them coming.

I've done that too. Unfortunately the last few days I seem to have written about things (like weddings) that I don't have a 'stock' photo for.

I have taken wedding photos but if you haven't just get some shots of a church or a passing wedding hire car etc.

@arthurchappell good idea. I do have plenty of wedding photos but many are from 're-digital' days so I'd have to scan them, haven't got around to anything like that yet.

I was very annoyed with myself that I forgot my camera yesterday, apart from plenty of pretty autumn leaves I also saw someone on one of those so-called 'hoverboards' (like a gyroscope-driven skateboard)

@Fleura there is nothing worse than seeing a great photo opportunity when you haven't got a camera with you. I think if ET dances in front of me it'll be a day when I don't have my camera.
