I do not switch off my computer when I am working in office.
Sometimes I do not switch off the computer even when i leave my office for the day.
I will switch off the monitor, but not the pc.
When I am at home, I will switch off computer whenever I am going out, even if it is just for an hour or so.
I do not switch on air conditioner all the time at home, so having the computer on all the time will cause it to overheat.

Yes, that is my concern too.
If we do not control the usage of electricity, we will waste money for nothing.
I agree that switching off pc is a good habit.
Since we are not at home to use it, why waste it?
I think the exception is when we are downloading something that will take an hour or more to complete.

A laptop doesn't use much electricity.

Hello..
I mostly work on my laptop. So I just put down its screen and it goes in sleep mode. And with that I can be on my work whenever I open it again. So its easy like that. But if I have to use desktop computer then I guess I will switch it off if I am going out for a hour.

I cannot imagine doing that. Most of us do not switch on our air con at home all the time.
When we use the laptop, it will be very hot, and it will get hang up, or shut down automatically.
The heat from laptop is terrible.
it must be hot enough to cook an egg.

@scheng1 lol...
Well, my laptop is not getting that much heat if I use it on my desk. Whenever I need to go out for hour or two hour then I just keep my laptop screen down and it just went on sleep mode. Yes I lost internet connection but all the applications window stay on when I open it again.

haha, that is true.
That is why I do not turn off the computer in the office, since it is in air-conditioned room.
However, my place is hot and humid all year round, and I do not switch on the air-con all the time.
I have to switch off computer to avoid overheating.

I switch off my laptop only if there is a thunderstorm. It is a habit that I took long ago in a professional environment where we were not allowed to switch off computers (more a computer is switched on/off, more there is a risk of failure) : it goes automatically to sleep mode and shut the internet connection after 1/2 hour if it is not used.

I wonder why there is a need to switch off computers in a thunderstorm.
There is no such rule over here, though we have many storms within a year.
In my office, many of us do not switch off our office computers too, unless we are using laptop, and we need to bring the laptop home.

@scheng1 For the same reason that it is better to not use a fixed line phone during a thunderstorm : because of the risk of overvoltage. Even if circuit breakers are very good, they are not made to support a lightning of 100 million volts, and the thunder will kill at least the power supply if it falls on the line. You need an electric installation with overvoltage arresters to avoid this.

I never actually turn it off. It takes too long to reboot!

I'll switch off during a thunderstorm and before I go to bed. Otherwise, I'll let it go to sleep. It'll save energy and money on your utility bills.

If you switch off instead of letting the computer on sleep mode, you will save more energy, and your utility bill will be a dollar or two lesser.
I do not know if you are using laptop or desk top.
I am using desktop, so the power goes to the CPU and the monitor.
I will have to switch off both to save money.

I do that as when the current goes off which is common here it consumes the UPS current which is not called for.

I will definitely switch off the laptop.
In Singapore, it is so hot all the time, and having the laptop on for just an hour is making it hot enough to cook an egg.
i am not joking about it.
Sometimes the laptop gets so hot that the whole thing hang, and you have to switch it off.

I do not have to switch on my computer if I am at work.
I do not switch off the office computer unless it is Friday evening, and I will be away for the weekends.
Here in Singapore, the weather is hot, and the computer feels hot after just a few minutes of usage.
