I've had the snow shovel out this afternoon - but not for the reasons you might think

This afternoon I've been out in the garden with the snow shovel. It hasn't snowed or anything and I hope it won't for ages. My grass was ankle deep in dead leaves and I couldn't find the leaf rake. I tried a stiff brush and then I spotted the snow shovel and it turned out to be almost perfect. I now have two big brown garden wheelie bins full to bursting with swept-up leaves. And I'm feeling a bit smug about repurposing the snow shovel. Do you have any unconventional gardening tips?

I haven't even got a snow shovel, but use an ordinary garden spade as one if necessary. Does that count?

The snow shove is a very broad, flat, plastic shovel so it weighs very little but picks up lots of leaves. I was quite astonished by my genius in improvising with it :-)

@boiboing That sounds a good method to me. My leaves are carpeting my lawn and patio, I'll have to do something about them soon.

@jaboUK The problem is that no sooner do you get them up than the wind blows and the ground is covered all over again.

My neighbour put the electric slander on her husband's hard skin on his fever.

I love raking leaves. But with a shovel must make it very hard for the back.

No, it's actually very easy and probably more effective than a rake. It helps that it's very lightweight.

Good reuse of the tools available! Unlike a colleague who, late one dryish summer, resorted to half a litre of kerosene and a match, costing him most of his garden fence in the process. Pyromaniac!

Ouch - he joins the long list of people who have started bonfires with petrol.
