Have you ever noticed ………new isn’t always……..

Today everyone wants a new car, computer, watch, tablet, or the latest and best electronic devices. However, new isn’t always better. I have noticed that the higher the technology and the small and light weight it is – it breaks quicker. Yes it seems to break quicker. Take for example – An old classic car – now they knew how to build them back then. The engines were easy to work on and they lasted forever. Today cars are all electronic and when it breaks down it costs so much to fix. Furthermore, today cars are built cheap. What is it a person once told me – today cars are like tin cans? If you’re in an accident they crumble so easily. If I have an accident - give me an older car please. I trust them much more than the newer ones today. Here’s another example. I bought one of the first laptop computers that came out with a color screen back in 1993. You know what that laptop still works today. Yah it’s slow, it’s old, and you can’t access the Internet on it. But laptops today last a few years and you need to buy a new one. Point in things built back then last longer than they do today. Do you have any other examples of what you still own that is old and people are telling you that you need a new one? Image source – Wikimedia.org

To quote Matthias from Monty Python's "Life of Brian": "No, I'm just a poor old man. I have no time for law- breakers. My legs are grey. My ears are gnarled. My eyes are old and bent.". Some things can't be replaced .

I like the bent eyes part. What exactly do you see with bent eyes -- more colors?

Actually our dining room suite is old, very old. My Grandma had it custom made almost 80 years ago, but it is still as solid as the day it was delivered to her. Its made of walnut and you're right, it is stronger and better than anything you could buy today. Besides.....it has a lot of sentimental value, afterall, there have been 3 generations of my family enjoy meals on it and little kids playing beneath it playing hide and seek.

This is what I\m talking about. Today everything is made from pressed woods that are so cheap and fall apart so easily. Keep it in your family and hope your children will cherish it and keep it long afterwards.

@poehere Our son has told us that he looks forward to having it one day. The house he owns now is just too small for it, but in time he'll buy something bigger and we'll be happy to pass it down to him.

Yes, you are very right that old cars used to be more solid and sturdy and new cars are not such. In case of an accident if one is sitting in a new car, it could be fatal. You see technology keeps changing everyday and every equipment/gadget/appliance is modified as per the advanced technology because human being want new models/new things all the time. Modification or say improvement is a consistent process and it cannot be stopped. Take mobile phones for example, Mobile phones of yesteryear (Nokia) were more durable than much advanced smart phones of today (which sometimes fail very quickly). But people like to go with the flow and things move on like it only.

@poehere - It is good to hear that you try your best to use ipone, as much as you can and you do not fancy for newer version. I also try my best to use old phones/devices as much as I can and don't like to spend money on new products just for the sake of it.

You are so correct on this one. I still use an iPhone 3 because it is solid and still works. When it goes out I'll get a new one. But for now I have all the same features on my 3 as others have on the new one. I am not a person to run out and buy the newest, latest, or greatest toy on the market. I like to wait around a few years to make sure they work out all the bugs and by that time it's a lot cheaper to buy too.

@dpk262006 It is easier to keep the one I have and not buy a new one. I have a lot of stuff on mine and hate to start over to configure a new one. I just like the way mine is setup and keep using it. Because here our 3G doesn't work well and I never used it anyhow or added it to my services so why change?

No ...but I agree with what you are saying... another example we had a washing machine that was at least 20 years old and moved house with us three times.... then it broke for good... but the new washing machine only lasted 3 years....

Yah I think the new motto for business now is - make them last 18 months to 3 years so they have to buy again. Before when we build them to last we never sold a lot of new ones. Now we sell three times as much. This is sad but this is how I feel. They don't build stuff like they use to.

Couldn't agree more. The old laptop Packard bell brought in 1993 or 4 is still working today. Running strong on DOS + Windows 3.1 I see clients bring me laptop that are less than 2 or 3 years old and they have tons and tons of issues on them and would cost some money to fix the again like buying a new mother board.

This is very true and I have said this for a long time, the way things are being built these Days is so they only last a bit which then means it is cheaper to buy new then to get it repaired Take TV's they used to last for years and years then when they did break it was cheaper to get them repaired now it is cheaper to buy a new one

That is true of so many things today. Before it was cheaper to fix your computer or laptop now it's cheaper to buy a new one. Same with your phones, tablets, and so many other things around your home.

Some of the old things are great and it is always good to have old things and some of my friends do collect old things and I do like the old radios very much. I remember seeing the old dial telephone and it was one of the cutest thing.

I do all my own computer building here for me. I find out if I do buy a good named mother board, memory and hard drives they can last forever. But when you buy a computer made in a store they use the cheapest parts on the market so they last no time at all.

My husband was the original owner of a 1969 elCamino - that thing was built like a Mac Truck. I made him sell it because it was the most uncomfortable thing to ride in. I got whip lash when he shifted gears and it was rather ugly...so I'll take a nice brand new vehicle any day.

Oh I agree 100% @poehere . And if we'd quit importing everything from China and go back to building our own stuff, well, maybe it'd last longer again. I have a 2000 Saturn (I'd prefer a 1957 Chevy), but the only thing I've done to my car outside of regular maintenance is replace a crank shaft sensor. That's pretty good for a 15 year-old car. My sister has a 1996.

When my daughter started to drive instead of buying her a new car I bought her a 1957 Mustang because I felt it was much safer for her to drive on the road in case she had an accident like so many young drivers do.

I bought a washer and dryer about five or six years ago. When I told the salesman my old washer and dryer had lasted over 20 years he said, "Don't expect this new one to last that long. You'll probably only get 7 years out of it." I have a Mac that I've had for about 4 years now. It's a desktop but I haven't had a bit of trouble with it. Before that I had the Cube which I had for 10 years. Yes, Mac are more expensive but they seem to last longer. My first computer was an Apple //c I bought back in about 1986. I had that computer until the internet came along. It was too old to get on the internet so I replaced it.

You are so right about everything breaking so fast. I also agree with you about older computers. I still have some around here that are now 15 years old and going strong. The same holds true with older hard drives. They lasted around 8 years and the new ones last around 18 months.

What a wise observation. It looks like the devices were upgraded but made to break in short time because a new and upgraded kind of devices will be on the market by that time.

That's so correct. Today they build to last a few years because if they built like before there don't make money. Things lasted too long and nobody was buying new.

When I was young I bought a new car every 2 years. Part of it was because of my job and the other part was the fact I loved the look. But then one time I bought an old antique car. That was the best car I ever owned. It was easy to fix and I could do a lot of the work on it myself.
