The Manchester City Skyline

Photo, taken by me - the Manchester CIS Tower

With so much scaffolding, construction sites and cranes hovering over our tower blocks I find myself wondering what the city will look like when we finish building it. Everywhere I look there is a new building going up, and in Manchester much of it is hotels and expensive apartment property. With so many homeless in the city the endless tetras-like reconstruction of the rich people’s playground looks absurd an even offensive. I wonder when the bubble will burst and if the properties will then become cheap housing for everyone else. The photo is of one of our finer buildings, the Manchester CIS Tower. Arthur Chappell

So much better than the days when the city was just left to fall down. So many beautiful old buildings were neglected.

yes there is that though Manchester has never recovered from the trashing of the city's small businesses for the Arndale shopping mall monstrosity to go up

@boiboing yes but sadly it survived though many surrounding properties were trashed - amazing that no one was killed. I heard the blast from three miles away

@arthurchappell It's a terrible thing to say but I think it's widely agreed that the IRA couldn't have picked an uglier building to attack than the Arndale.

these things will keep changing and people reach higher and higher, I much prefer the rural areas with sky and space

The obsession with height does suggest an attempt to outdo Nimrod and the other builders of the Tower of Babel

If the current government have their way the bubble will never burst and the only option available to the poor (working or not working) will be the modern equivalent of the workhouse

A frightening but very realistic danger @firef1y
