Suppose for a moment that you are woken in the night by a sound downstairs that sounds like an intruder is in the house. Would you leap out of bed and attempt to stop the burglar or would you stay very quiet and hope that he does not realize you are there?

I was awakened once by somebody trying to open my door lock at 3 am. I opened all the lights and made some noise and he ran away, but he was not inside the house. In 2010, I went out a Saturday morning to do some shopping, and I found a burglar in my house when I came back. I spoke a moment with the man before he ran on me to go outdoors. A burglar will ran away 9/10 if he realizes that a house is not empty : staying quiet and let him rob your house is definitely not the good method.

You have had a close encounter so I take your word for it that a burglar will most likely run away.

That would not go down very well here or in England. I would end up being convicted of grievous bodily harm and he would go scot free.
