It is election day in Canada. Who Knew? Yes our elections are less exciting and interesting than our neighbor and friend the US but just as important. Three main political parties are running for the top job of Prime Minister, the incumbent Conservative party with Stephen Harper, The New Democratic Party Tom Mulcair and Justin Trudeau of the Liberal Party. Just a reminder to all Canadians to get out and vote today.

Here in Washington state we have election coming up on November 3. I don't live in the city of Spokane but their big vote is on whether to raise minimum wage. They say if the initiative passes some people will get up to $21 an hour. But I think most people will get the bottom end of it which I think is $17 an hour. It is set up according to the type of work and how many employees a company has. Businesses are fighting hard to keep it from passing.

$17.00 is high, here depending on which Province you are in it runs from 10.00 to 11.25 an hour, and business complain that it is too much. The government at the time decides if and how much to increase it, there is no vote

@Freelanzer Here in the states the federal government sets a minimum wage that companies cannot pay below. I think it's $7.25. Each state can set it's own minimum wage or leave it at the federal minimum. The state of Washington has the highest minimum wage of any state. It is somewhere around $9.75. This voting in a minimum wage is something new. A little over a year ago a small city in Washington (SeaTac) voted in a minimum wage of $15. Boy did the businesses there whine and cry. They were all going to go out of business. A year later there was a news story about what had happened since the $15 minimum wage went into effect. There was barely any change. Matter of fact many business grew.

@RichardMeister That is a drastic increase, ours only increase by a small percentage a year. However, I am surprised to hear that the federal government standard is 7.25 - can anyone survive on that wage?
