I’m Becoming a Lazy Bum

When I was laid off my last job (a layoff that I knew was coming because the company was closing down and moving elsewhere–and a layoff I was looking forward to) I decided although I hadn’t reached full retirement age, I would sign up for Social Security. I was tired of dragging myself to work every workday. I had done that most of my life (I was raised on a dairy farm so it was up at the crack of dawn to milk the cows which also had to be milked every evening). After some initial problems I am now getting a check every month (nothing to write home about but it’s money). Most mornings I get up and go to the kitchen. On cold mornings I fix either hot tea or hot cocoa. On hot days I pour a glass of iced tea or fix a glass of cold chocolate milk. Then I’ll get on the computer and check my emails and the local news. Most days I try to write something. Sometime during the day I’ll look out the window and say I need to get out there and do something. For several days I looked out the window and told myself I needed to get out there and mow the lawn. Then I would get back on my computer. One thing I found myself doing is going to YouTube and watching music videos or old show of The Voice or X Factor. The weather forecast for this last Saturday called for rain in the afternoon so I got off my lazy behind and mowed the lawn on Saturday morning. The rains did come so it has been raining on and off ever since. It’s very wet out there right now which we need after the long hot summer we had. On Thursday mornings I do get my rear in gear and go to a critique group. I try to take something I’ve written during the week but the group doesn’t seem to care as long as I can critique what they have written. Last week I took a humorous article I had publishing back in 1999 about Y2K. Everyone got a good laugh out of it and the thoughts of the doom many expected to happen come Y2K. So here I am this morning sitting in front of my computer. I’m not thinking about doing anything outside because it is too wet out there. But I could vacuum or do something inside. Maybe I’ll get off my lazy bottom and do something today. Oh, I can pat myself on the back for doing one thing this weekend. I got busy and made homemade chicken noodle soup. I had to get rid of some left over chicken.

getting busy or getting things done sometimes need a different perspective. You may not be fruitful in terms of working (Career-wise) but at least you are getting some household chores done and/or cooking so the day's not totally wasted. I understand though the feeling that you are getting especially since you feel that you have worked non stop for all your life and you feel that you deserve some rest now. For me, if you can afford that kind of life now, then there is nothing wrong. But i suggest that maybe you can try other things like reading or whatever hobby you may have so you will still be fruitful or productive :)

Oh but how nice to be able to be a lazy bum just because you can! As long as you can get your bills paid and afford to "live", then you are free to do as you please with your time! So would you say you are officially retired now? What is the challenge for today?

I'm still trying to do a bit of freelance writing but so far I'm not getting any bites. I did everything I could before I was laid off to either eliminate or lower my bills. Since I'm over 62 and don't make what I was when I was working I no longer have to pay property tax. I bought into the solar panels to get my electric bill lowered. I paid off all the bills I could. When I was working I used to go out to dinner at least once a week. Now I'm lucky if I go once a month. I knew the layoff was coming since last November so I did my best to prepare for it. I'm not a rich man but I'm getting by.

@RichardMeister I know you like to be well prepared - and it's good you had that decent stretch of time to be able to do it. You seem to be a productive person - you would never let things get to the point of being uncontrollable. The freelance writing could still take off - who knows you may still out do Stephen King someday!
