Have you heard a TV show described as having jumped the shark? It means the programme was considered very good but suddenly started introducing ludicrous changes to the storylines and scripts or introduced new characters that ruined the show an made it less entertaining. If a popular series jumps the shark it can plummet in the ratings and even get taken off the air.
The phrase actually originated from an episode of Happy Days where The Fonz went water skiing for a bet and literally jumped over a shark. This is the moment it happened, a three minute scene that has become infamous TV folklore. It is the benchmark by which all lousy TV is measured.

given the embarrassment the episode caused many stations probably skip over airing it
