Halloween

If you celebrate Halloween at the end of this month you will be following a pre-Christian Celtic tradition that is eerily like ours today. They wore masks, they went from door to door collecting food and they lit bonfires. They did this because they thought it was a time when the dead returned disguised as animals, often black cats! They were intent to either appease or scare off evil spirits, they called it Samhain. It was converted into a Christian festival to remember the dead - Hallow meaning 'saint', and een a contraction of 'evening'. Quite a turn around when you think about it.
