Do You Think Donald Trump will be The Republican Nominee for President?

Three months after he announced, Donald Trump is still leading in the polls to be the Republican nominee for President. This is despite the fact that many members of the Republican establishment do not want him to be their candidate. It is also despite the fact that he has made a number of mistakes that would have derailed things for most candidates. For example: He said that veterans, like John McCain, who were captured are not heroes; He said he was a Christian, but could not recite a single Bible verse; He says he is Republican, but in the past has supported a number of issues that the Democrats support; He has made insulting comments about a variety of women; He is anti-immigrant at a time when the Republican establishment has been trying to attract minorities to their party. Despite all that, he is still ahead of every single other candidate going into the Republican primaries. It appears that Republican voters either love him or hate him. Feelings run strong when it comes to him. I'm not asking whether you happen to like him or agree with him. I just wonder if you think he will end up being the Republican candidate for President. Whether you like him or not, I'm just curious. Do you think he will be the Republican nominee?

No. I think the plan was for him to help his friend Hillary win by derailing the GOP. He has certainly done that. I think just before the nominations, or just before the election, he will do something so out there, that no one (not even the crazies) will vote for him. Then, there will not be time for the GOP to put up a real candidate.

Interesting perspective. All of those power people know each other. Is he really friends with Hillary? Or are you being facetious? Even though he's not kind to her publicly, it wouldn't surprise me if they were boiler room buddies.

@TheHorse - Hillary and Bill Clinton went to Donald Trump's last wedding and there are many photos of them together prior to this election season. Their daughters are the best of friends. Elizabeth Wallace could be right.

Believe me, I hope you are right. I think a lot of Republicans are afraid that is exactly what might happen ... which is why they don't want him to be the candidate.

My husband would agree with you completely. He, and a lot of his business friends, think he would get us in wars, end trade agreements that help our country, ruin our relationships with other countries, etc. He also would not do a thing for the poor and working class ... has he ever?

Actually, Ben Carson has just gone ahead of him in the Iowa Caucus. I don't think Trump will ever be the nominee. I don't think he plans to be. I think he will run independent and guarantee that the party is split so that the Democratic nominee can win.

You could be absolutely right. A lot of things he does and says makes him seem more like a Democrat than a Republican ... and I don't think he would be good for the Republican party.

I have thought of him as a kind of joke, but if he actually won the nomination, I'd be kind of scared.

I think a lot of people, including many faithful Republicans that I know, are starting to get worried. Some of my Republican friends don't even want to talk about him.

This is a really good post. I hadn't seen his sillinesses laid out like that. The McCain blunder will not endear him to veterans. And even I can recite a few Bible verses. As you have done to the least of these... (Matt. 25). And it is rather stupid to alienate Mexican Americans precisely when Republicans are trying to figure out how to win Black and Latino votes. No, I don't think he will win the nomination. I think his strength in the polls is due to his lack of political correctness in a time when political correctness has gone amok (even I, a registered Democrat and career bleeding heart, admit that).

Thank you. I have to say that his success so far scares me ... yet it seems to keep going on! I am glad to hear that so many people do not want him to win the nomination. I hope someone is able to derail him.

I have been involved in politics for a pretty long time. I have got to say, this is the most bizarre election cycle I can remember. Anything is possible. He has remained the front runner, by many orders of magnitude for over 100 days now. If he keeps going like this, he may well secure the nomination. As candidates drop out, the margin will lessen, most of the supporters of the other GOP candidates will likely not go to Trump. The exception to that will be if Ted Cruz drops out (which is not likely just yet). Cruz supporters are likely the only ones who would support Trump should Cruz throw in the towel. I just don't see Trump winning the general election, against any Dem candidate. My hope however, is that if the general election comes down to the 2 major party nominations being Clinton and Trump, that my party's candidate will stand more of a chance. At this point I can't say who that will be for certain, but it will most likely be Gary Johnson, former New Mexico Governor.

You make a good point. This election is opening up more of an opportunity for a third party candidate. I supported Ross Perot back in the early 1990's when he was running for president and he did a good job for a 3rd party candidate. This is an interesting election cycle.

If he does win the nomination, one political analyst believes that it would be an asset to the Democrats Presidential nominee.

My gut says no, he won't be the nominee. I think he's popular right now because he doesn't kowtow to the media and this "political correctness," but rather speaks his mind. However, I've not heard him give us a concrete platform (of course, if he has the media wouldn't cover it, they're more interested in making him look like a fool). At some point he's going to have to say exactly what he stands for in detail, and that might turn people away. BTW, I don't think the Republicans have anything to worry about regarding minorities. They have a Latino, an African-American, and a woman among the front runners. All the Democrats have running right now are rich, old, and white career politicians.

According to the experts yesterday evening - yes he will be. If he wins New Hampshire and he should, then he will be the nominee.

Yes, there are experts who believe he will be the nominee. I'm not sure that will be a good thing for the Republican party. One thing is for sure, the political season is not boring this time around.

I think there is a good possibility that he will be the republican nominee. In the beginning, I really didn't think he would last as long as he has.

Yes, I agree. I didn't take his political plans seriously until recently. Now, I'm starting to think he could be the candidate.
