I realize my last photo didn't really show much, but I'm back to give you another peek. Again I've chosen to show you my flowers. This one is a hanging basket. If you look closely, you can see the firewood in the background (which is how we heat our house) and the fact that the house is a log house. This type of construction used to be very popular in the western regions of North America. People cleared the land and used the logs to make their houses. This particular house was built later in the 1970's, but even then people in western Canada used this method. It's not a very efficient use of materials if you ask me. There are so many other building methods that use fewer trees and readily available supplies, but this is part of the history of this area. As the person who is responsible for keeping things clean at home, I can also report that keeping a log building clean is a ridiculous chore. You have to imagine the way the curve of the logs inside the house becomes a magnet for dust. Anyway, I won't go on with my cleaning woes.
So the original small house was added onto by a previous owner and that is the part that you saw in my last post. It uses post and beam construction. When we purchased it, it was unfinished. Still is.

I didn't realize the challenges either. It still has a cozy feel, though.

Typical of the U.S.. Europe has mostly used permanent materials for construction. We use things that can be destroyed easily.

I think people build with the materials they have. This cabin was built by a 21-year-old young man who was clearing space for his home and using the trees he cut down to do it. He has gone on to be the main building contractor in this area, but he started with this little cabin. People now make some more informed choices for roofing and other supplies. Btw, Elizabeth, this is Canada, not the US.

@Sheilamarie78 Perhaps our two counties have this lack of long term thinking in common.

I suppose you could. We're not doing any renovations any time soon, though.

Thanks, Judy. We still have some growing but they've been slowing down.

I like to read posts with photos, too, even though I haven't added them to most posts so far. That was why I added one here.
