Every year our local fire department puts on a Halloween party for the community. It costs $2 to get in, there are free refreshments, goody bags for the kids, games, dancing, fog machines and lights, decorations. It's usually really cool. My kids always find friends there to hang out with and they always have a good time. Last year there was a hayride and a haunted house as well.
So we were really looking forward to going.
I picked up my youngest son from a birthday party an hour early just so we could go to this Halloween party because they were so looking forward to it.
We stayed at the party half an hour... that's it!
It wasn't nearly as good as it has been in previous years.
There weren't a lot of people there... and of those that were there my kids didn't really know anyone. My youngest knew a few people but my 9 year old didn't know anyone. In past years kids of all ages would be there, even teenagers. But this year it seemed it was mostly little kids, and not even very many of them..
There was no hay ride, no haunted house. There was no adult supervising the games so kids weren't taking turns and then it turned chaotic when a bunch of them starting throwing bean bags around the room.
They still had the refreshments and the dancing.. but my boys didn't want to dance, and refreshments only get you so far.
After awhile I sat down bored. My husband joined me, also bored. When my 9 year old came and sat down complaining he was bored too, that's when I knew it was time to go!
We may not even bother next year..

Most kids grow out of it. One of my coworkers has not grown out of it and plans to dress up this year... some people just really love it. I guess it's just a day to play pretend and it doesn't matter what age you are. It can be fun, but I only enjoy it because of the kids.

@boiboing @katsmeow1213 I am just a big kid, because I really like Halloween. I like decorating for it. I like painting and carving pumpkins. I love the hayrides and haunted houses. I like dressing up and seeing all the kids in their costumes. It is just fun to me.

Sorry the party was a bust this year. Some of the halloween parties here were also a bust but the haunted houses were not. I'm not into all that so I don't participate. I hope next year will be better.

I don't really like anything really scary.. we just do stuff for the kids.

Sounds as if someone new was in charge of it or rather someone new was not taking charge. Sorry it turned out so bad.

It is sad that it was such a bust. The Halloween party at my daughter's school was a bust this year, too. The kids still stayed and played and had fun, but they kept looking for the games and the haunted house, which the school did not do this year. Also, they did not really decorate for it, either. Basically they just had a bunch of people dressed up and running around the gym with a few decorations. There was a ton of good snacks, though.

That's too bad. My kids would have done better if they'd at least had a few friends there, but none of their friends were there and the kids were too rowdy.

@katsmeow1213 Yeah, the kids having friends there is definitely the most important thing. The kids at school missed the things that were not there, but their disappointment was short-lived, because they just went on to play with their friends.
I wonder whether or not the same people planned the fire department party this year. Maybe it was planned by new people that didn't really know what they were doing, so it was not that good. Hopefully next year they will have learned and know to do better.

@purplealabaster I think you're right. I think different people planned it this year so it wasn't as good as past years have been.

No they certainly didn't promote it very well. Maybe they were trying to be cheap this year..

It sounds like this year was a bust because of the hayride and other fun things. Ask next year if they are going to do that before you go.. I would think the Fire department would go all out. Sorry it was boring.

Yeah, I think we probably won't go again unless we know some other people that are going. That's the big thing is you have to know people who will be there in order for it to be fun.
