See the true color of a person

Some of us have this instinct for people. We instinctively can "see" the true color of a person even if he can hide it very well. Once I attended a job interview as a co-interviewer. Both of us were interviewing a candidate for a junior position. This candidate appeared as a very sweet young lady who was new to the workforce. She had worked part time while studying, and she appeared as a hardworking, humble and eager to learn. When the interview was over, the 2 of us were discussing about this candidate. We had to tell our boss if we wanted to hire this young lady, and at what salary. My colleague liked her very much, and she felt that she, as the supervisor, could get along with this candidate. I had my doubt. I felt that the candidate would worm herself to get boss's favor, and would backstab my colleague in order to get her position. We did hire her, and later this young lady did backstab my colleague who was her supervisor. In the end, both of us who were the co-interviewers left the company because of this young lady

That's horrible. There is really no way of knowing what would happen in the future but I guess we just have to expect the possibility that job candidates wouldn't show their true colors during the interview. Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience.

Actually I know her true color, but I cannot convince my colleague to see that candidate as she is. In the end, both of us suffer. Being proven right does not help anything.

There are all kinds of people who make up a workforce and unless you are psychic, you can't really tell. It was a 50/50 split in the decision to hire her and it could have gone either way. Sometimes we have a hunch or a feeling but while yours was right the other was wrong - there would have been no way to know for sure.

I think some of us are better than the others when it comes to intuition. That's why a good HR manager counts for something in the company. If he or she can prevent a backstabber from coming into the company, she has done a good deed for the rest of the colleagues.

You were right and the other wrong but the end result was bad for both of you. Too bad she did not agree with you in the first place. But you had no facts, just a general impression, I think the result was inevitable.

Almost all my colleagues trusted my judgement. I am more often right than wrong when it comes to such matter. Perhaps it is by training. Perhaps it is an inborn talent. For that particular case, I did not insist on rejecting the candidate, and my colleague was captivated by her seemingly friendly attitude.
