This is the time of year, when many of us in the UK, would make a bee-line for the nearest Woolworths' store, but since, they closed all their doors in about 2009, we no longer have that pleasure, for our stocking fillers, little gifts,Xmas items, chocs and kids Toys.
Unfortunately, while your needs may be catered for more in cities, in small towns around the UK, there are few places to go,especially when it comes to 'sussing out' what the grandkids want, as even most Toy Shops have now gone too, mainly due to Online shopping and huge town centre rates.
Woolworths' was just THE family shop, and Xmas just isn't the same without it's High St. presence, who wants to go shop in Charity shops, which are blessed by councils and their hugely reduced town centre rates, making for very unfair competition to ordinary small retailers.
While town centres used to come alive during the Xmas period, they are now overburdened with these Charity shops, Estate Agents and Take-aways, so shoppers are being forced Online!

Woolworth's was by far the largest store chain in Britain for a very long time, with branches in virtually every town. They sold everything from sweets and records to electrical parts and clothing.
It was always the busiest place o a Saturday afternoon and I was amazed when they finally closed.

Did hear a whisper, that the receivers were thinking of re-opening some of the stores, but that's all it is, they didn't have much luck, finding someone to take the chain over before, but for the sake of kids everywhere I hope they do...

@Inlemay Really can't answer that, only know the receivers were called in, and had no luck finding another company to take the stores on over here, they did go Online for a while, but wasn't very successful, maybe they had better luck abroad, or perhaps every country traded their Woolies as separate companies, and those were more successful...
