Dreading Tomorrow

My son and oldest daughter both go in to see the orthodontist tomorrow morning and I have a feeling that we will be finding out when they will be getting their braces on. They've been going there for a few years now for monitoring, which is done until they are ready for their braces. Up to this point it has cost us very little, we only had to pay for the spacer they put in the girl's mouth. At her last visit they were confident that she would be ready for braces by her next appointment (we have been waiting for all her teeth to come in). One kid in braces wouldn't be so bad, but my son has a fairly severe overbite and it is affecting how he talks. I'm starting to think that they should start his soon to help with his speech. The problem is that his teeth stick out far enough that his lips don't touch unless he really thinks about how he's talking (which he seldom does). They had said that they want to start his during a growth spurt, but they will start them earlier if it's affecting his life. Since it's affecting his speech, I would say it affects his life. Plus, he's been losing baby teeth recently, which they said is a sign of a growth spurt. I very well could find out that both of them will be getting their braces (and head gear in the case of the boy) soon, which means paying for two sets of braces at the same time. The only good thing about that is that we should be done paying for them by the time the youngest needs them (I don't feel lucky enough to have her not needing them, though it would be nice).

I've never had anything to do with braces, luckily my children didn't need them. Good luck tomorrow.

I wish mine didn't need them, but the one has my same tiny mouth and the teeth are in places they shouldn't be and the other has such a large overbite it needs to be fixed. I'm still holding out hope that the youngest won't need them, though she probably will too.

You don't say how old are the children.

The boy is 11 and the girl is 13. He is on the early side of losing all his baby teeth and she is on the late side.

I wonder why the older generations never needed any of these things.

I think it might be more that it wasn't as available back then and it wasn't as important then as it is now.

Two of my sons had invisalign a loved them (as far as braces go) we will use them for any others that need them.

I wish we could do invisalign but my kids have issues that can't be fixed with that type of braces.

I hate to think what that's going to cost but your kids will thank you for it when they are older.

We only found out what some of it will cost since they don't give an exact price until they are ready to start the process. Then they know what it will all take and there are no surprises during treatment. But we do have an idea of how much it will cost in total.

@fawkes62 I'm sure it's a lot but it's an investment in their future I suppose.

I feel for you, I only had one that needed braces. but if they need them I'm sure you will figure out how to get them. Good luck to you and your children.

So far only one is starting the process enough to have to start paying but the other will probably be starting in about 4 months. I will probably pick up a few more hours a week at work and might have to move to full time a few years before I'm ready to.

These braces are really tough to carry for months or year but in the end they are fruitful.

I had braces when I was my daughter's age and I didn't like them, but I'm glad I had them. Hopefully she will feel the same when she's older.
