Things "Super Fans" Say That Annoy Me (Part 3)

For my third quote that I hear and read from people who think they have to preach the gospel of their favorite singer in this way, I pick one of my least favorite lines about music, probably second only to the aforementioned "everything by...." answer to the question about one favorite song.
HOW CAN YOU NOT LIKE (insert person's name here)???
Oh, that will endear me to whomever you're selling.
"How can you not like the Doors?" "How can you not like the Beatles?" "How can you not like Led Zeppelin?"
Yeah, and how can you not like raw octopus meat? (Note: that is a joke. I completely understand how people can not like raw octopus meat: the mention of it makes me cringe!
)
The two things that bother me about this are, first, the arrogance of the speaker. "I like the good bands, you obviously don't." Is it an attempt to appear cool or trendy? I heard this all the time regarding the goth bands in the 80's (such as the Church, the Cult, the Cure, etc.).
The other thing that bothers me is the arrogance also implies that the person to whom the comment is said lacks intelligence. To me, "How can you not like the Beatles (or whomever)?!" is code for, "You're stupid if you don't like the Beatles (or whomever)."
NOBODY should have to justify their likes and dislikes in music -- or movies (yes, I have watched Porky's more than once
), books, or raw octopus meat.

I've seen Andrew Zimmern eat it on Bizarre Foods, and he says it's very sweet. I'm allergic to seafood, however, so I'll take your word (and his) for it.

If we all had the same opinions, the world would be a boring place. I believe though "how can you not like...." is a buzz phrase when they really have nothing more to add. I have a friend that prefaces just about everything with "believe it or not..." and I have joking responded either "believe" or "not" and they never caught on. Music is personal like a pair of shoes, it should fit and be comfortable for you.

You are so right. . . no one should have to justify their dislikes or likes.
