Things "Super Fans" Say That Annoy Me (Part 4)

Here's another one of those comments that the die-hard fans say that makes me laugh and makes me shake my head. Understand that this comment is usually uttered about 2-3 weeks after an album comes out. I CAN'T WAIT FOR (his/her/their) NEXT ALBUM!! What, that new album you bought two weeks ago is so crappy you can't stand it and need something different? Have you even listened to that album that came out yesterday? I used to be like that when I was a 14-year-old teenybopper. Understand, however, that my teenybopper idol was Elton John, and when I was 14 he was putting albums out, on average, once every six months. There was no such thing as "waiting" for a new Elton John album, because by the time you had the old album memorized he had a new album out! (Case in point: between 1971 and 1976, Elton had twelve albums, counting the "greatest hits" and re-release of his 1968 album Empty Sky [which had never been released in the U.S. previously], and that doesn't include the Friends soundtrack, three non-album singles, AND a dozen non-album B-sides! Since 1976, he has released 22 albums.) I understand it's not a phrase to be taken literally, but yes, you can wait. You don't have any option! Instead of wishing for the next album, how about truly enjoying the ones you have?

I would think it was be a compliment to the band/group when fans say they can't wait for their next album. To me it means that they are exceptional and fans just can't get enough.

I can see that, especially if it's been a long time since someone released an album. I've seen Don Henley fans, however, clamoring for a live album for this tour that just started and is 99% carbon copies of the songs on his new album. Meanwhile, the ink isn't dry on the receipt from buying the new album. That makes me wonder if they don't like the album and want something else. My other read on "I can't wait" -- and understand, I'm not talking about when they announce there's a new album coming out in two months, I mean they start saying it two weeks after the new album is released -- is the music isn't good enough to sustain interest.

We all have those skeletons (or 45s or CDs) in our closets. .
