Cellphones necessary?

After hearing the news of a teenage girl refusing to relinquish her cell phone in class and the resulting mayhem with police, I have to wonder...Why do we allow students to carry cellphones on campus? Should we stop them from carrying to school? When I was in school, we had to go to the payphone and call out...much simpler. What do you think?

That's a difficult one to answer. The argument in favour of cellphones is that it's important for children and their parents to be able to contact each other in case of an emergency, but the younger generation use cellphones far too much. I'm not sure how one goes about getting the balance right.

I think that children need to allow the people in charge to handle emergencies. Really, what good does it do to have umpteen students calling out in the midst of what may be mayhem? Now maybe there can be an app that locks the phone, not allowing it to work except to call emergency numbers. Kids can do their private conversing with their classmates in person, at school. It is good for them to develop personal skills with live interaction.

@mrdprince I agree about the need for live interaction, so an app like that sounds like a good idea. When it comes to emergencies though, it may not involve umpteen students. It could be something like a parent needing to let their child know they'll be late fetching them from school, or that somebody else is coming because they've been held up due to unforeseen circumstances.
