He asked me about other departments

We got a new part timer at work. I can't remember if I talked about it here or not. If not, well we got a new part timer at work.
Anyway, he started talking to me on our fifeteen minute break last night about a differnt department. Asking if I thought they might
need help. I told him I would not know, but I did tell him who he could ask.
Then later on the last break he asked me again about different departments. You see he's disabled. I won't say how because even though
the likelihood of him ever coming across this is slim, I still want to respect him. Anyway, it does make things a bit different for him,
I won't say difficult because I don't think it's quite difficult for him, just different. He's only been working for us for a week. He's
only stocked for maybe five shifts or so? Anyway when he was talking during the last break he was halfway between being determined, and
asserting that he can do this, and halfway between wanting to switch to another department.
He asked me if I thought he'd be better at a diferent department, and which department that might be. I told him that the manager's think
he is doing better. Which is true, both of my managers have said that. However, they have also said that they do not believe this department
is for him. I think he knows that, he said as much last night when we were talking.
The grocery department is not as easy as people tend to think it is. I've seen so many people come and go from my department because of several reasons.
One being that they didn't realize how difficult it can be, secondly because they weren't getting as many hours as they thought they would. Last year
three guys came in to work with us and they were all gone after only a month give or take of working.
I've had people ask me about working for the grocery deparment and I tell them that it's not as easy as they think. I don't want people coming in from
other departments, us training them, and then they deciding it wasn't as easy as they thought and leaving. We get that enough with the new hires.
Sure there are things about the job that I don't like, most of it is centered around the hour issue. Of course I believe our new grocery manager (well
he's been with our store for about six months but with the company for 30 years) might just be the one to step up and put his foot down about the hour
issue. I won't go into that, but long story short it involves hours being cut and it putting pressure on everyone.
I realize I started talking about the new part timer and then veered into different territory. I hope the new guy stays, whether he will or not is yet
to be determined. As I've said before, they never tend to stay very long. Even some of the employees we have are getting tired and pulling back, not
doing as thorough a job. It puts pressure on everyone else.
