How did a get a piece of metal in my foot?

I never wear shoes, summer or winter (inside). I walked around all summer outside barefoot...in the garage, in the workshop everywhere without incident.
Last evening I stepped on something here in my office. I have a small rug under my chair and that's where I wound up with something in my foot. I assumed it was a splinter of some kind. I pulled it out and tossed it in the trash can and it made a 'clink' sound when it hit the bottom.
This morning my foot was sore where it had been. I asked my husband to get out his 'tools' and check it out. It took out a needle and dug (not hard or I'd still be screaming) in my foot and there was nothing there. Good.
So we went to the little trash can and I pulled out the piece to show him, it turned out to be a small piece of metal. We have no idea what it is or where it came from. I guess I can go barefoot outside but I'd wear shoes in here!

It was too clean to have come from the garage, I think it has something to do with my office chair.

I gave myself plantar fascias from walking barefoot on concrete too much, so be careful with hard surfaces!

@AbbyGreenhill it feels like a stone bruise on your heel, but really is inflammation of the tendon that runs along the bottom of your feet, it hurts mostly in the heels, really bad first thing in the morning (before I started getting treatment I couldn't even put weight on my heels first thing in the morning) after sitting for awhile, etc. it can cause heel spurs, and I'm getting shots to calm and allow the tendons time to heal

@Jessicalynnt I've never heard of that, ouch! Is that sometime that can be cured or is it reoccurring?
