Working Championships

Today is Championships for Marching Band. I won't get to see much of it because I volunteered to work it to help the band earn some money. I will be allowed to stop and watch our Marching Band, but will have to work just before and just after. This actually saves me money because tickets are $15 but I get in for free because I'm working. I will be there 2pm til 10pm. Hubby is also working but in a different capacity. He will ride the bus down there with our marching band and help load and unload props and equipment, and right after they're done he'll ride the bus back to the school. We planned this to save ourselves money. Neither of us have to pay to park or pay to get in, but we'll still be able to see our Marching Band perform... we just won't be able to see any of the other bands. I'm thinking that next year I'd like to just pay to get in and maybe stay the whole day, because the really good Marching Bands go on at the end of the day, and I'd love to see them, but I'll be working and hubby will be back home by then. But hey, on the bright side, another year of marching band is over! Yippee.... of course Winterguard starts Nov. 9 and Drumline will be starting shortly there after...

When the older kids were in JROTC I always volunteered to ride the buses to the events and of course I always helped provide snacks, drinks and food because normally the competitions lasted all day. Usually we would bring a grill and cookout. When events were held at our school we also opened the concession stand to raise money. I always volunteered to help feed our kids. Parents would bring drinks, desserts and dishes to serve. So normally the first half of the competitions I was always busy inside setting up for our kids to eat but after they ate I was able to go out and watch.

The championships were at the college, I was actually paid $9 an hour for working it, but the money went to the band instead of me. A bunch of the parents worked it either before, after, or during our performance. The kids have fees every year so we work our butts off to try to pay them. This year the fee is $200 and I have 2 kids in the band.. so I have to raise $400. I think I've reached it, but now they're doing Winterguard and Drumline so there are more fees for that.

I think I'd rather spend the 15 dollars and not have to work. But it's commendable that you support them so much.

I had planned this quite awhile ago. Money is usually pretty tight, and we have birthdays and Christmas coming up so I'd rather not spend money that I don't have to. I've started a savings account specifically for Marching Band next year, as I tend to spend around $40 a week just on band shows... $20 for me and my boys to get tickets, $20 for food while we're all there for me and 4 kids. The twins have no choice as they are rehearsing all day so they have to eat at the show's concession stands, me and the younger boys can skip eating, but it's right during dinner time so... I try not to go to too many shows to save money, but that's no fun. So I just started saving up to help out with that, and I'll plan on saving a bunch for Championships.
